I'd been feeling uncharacteristically fragile and volatile today, couldn't figure out why, and asked for some insight and perspective.

55 unchanging. As soon as I thought about it, I remembered that there had been a partial solar eclipse today. (I was in a meeting at work, but other people were outside with pinholes looking at tiny projected crescent suns.)

I felt better instantly.

Ah. As I approach 55 I feel a lot to think about.

I also have a strong sense of deja vu...well I have done this before...yes but might 55 be the hexagram of the deja vu ? No reason it just feels it. An abundance of light/an eclipse....I don't know why it reminds me of deja vu.

Anyway here is a dream I had some time back. When I asked for insight into it's meaning I received 55uc.

I am in the kitchen in my childhood home trying to prepare a meal.....which includes chips ...anyway I cannot get on with this because the light bulb keeps blowing, .... they keep going out. Somehow the energy of these light bulbs is needed to cook the food, the oven depends on the lightbulbs. My father has to keep going out to buy new light bulbs. It's ridiculous,..how can we get anywhere when each light bulb only lasts a short while. At some point when he has gone out to get yet another light bulb I go into the front room where my sister is relaxing watching TV or something and she makes it clear she thinks my angst is silly. She doesn't realise that we cannot get anywhere because he has to keep going out for bulbs. She just thinks I am making a big fuss over making a meal, "can't you even cook a meal without all this fuss !"

He brings the next light bulb and we start to think actually we can't go on like this, something is wrong, this shouldn't be happening and he looks at the light bulb that can never stay on long enough to cook a meal, looks at it to maybe fix it. My mum is out so it's my job to get the meal cooked. Eventually a woman comes and shows us there is a panel in the wall and when she removes it, opens it, there is burning there a little 'pilot light', like a candle, burning steadily, it never goes out. We could have cooked with that power, we didn't need all those light bulbs.

I don't know who she is. She looks like a female engineer in dark blue overalls. I am very relieved the light is always there as it is very tiring for him always to go out to get new lightbulbs.

End of Dream

In real life my dad was a gas engineer and pilot lights were much in his realm of expertise.

I asked Yi about the meaning of this dream and got 55 unchanging. I thought that was great ! There is enough light to see to cook by, there is no need to go out buying more light bulbs. That little light the woman showed us never goes out, always burns steady. Its Enough. What a relief !

I thought I would relate that in it's entirety as it was quite a special dream. The warmth of that pilot light that never went out. 55 unchanging ? I already discussed this with others. I cannot make any definitive statements about how the dream and 55uc are connected...it just sits with me as a feeling about 55 uc and I like it with no wish for further analysis.

Looking at other examples on my journal I see I had 55uc when I asked if I should post a thread on 'pre natal poetry' here http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?18005-Pre-natal-Poetry I don't often ask about posting threads but I thought twice about that one. Anyway I was so glad I did as it bought a huge wealth of poems and thoughts from others.

That is how I'm feeling 55uc...a huge wealth, a cornucopia.....that will peak, will crest, and then subside...In the dream there was a light that was steady not just light bulbs blowing all the time. Sometimes creativity comes very brightly to the fore and there is a great richness.

I said I would aim to write in the nature of the hexagram and 55 is nice and big and messy as you can see :) It is often named 'Abundance', which is a clue.

I wouldn't like to try to narrow down the 55uc experience too much. If I received it in regard to a smaller mundane matter I'd generally feel that there was already enough of whatever is required to go ahead. The sun is as bright as it will ever get at noon. Things are ready. It's time to act, time to express.

Lise wrote of this pair

Traveller through time and space

55 - Act at the moment itself, next second it is gone
56 - Act according to the field where you are

Quoting what Hilary says of the pair 55/56 in her book

Abundance forms a pair with hexagram 56, Travelling:

'Abundance has many causes: few connections for the Traveller.'

These show two ways of being at the centre, responsible for making the decisions. The Traveller is on his own; but here, you are at the centre of an abundance of resources, plans and allies, feeling the weight of everything that led up to this point.

I think I recall having 55uc at times of confusion...so much to think of, so many factors. But there is enough light/ awareness/information at this time to make a choice, to go ahead, to act.

Wing says of 55 in it's unchanging form

LI, attachment in the lower trigram, arouses CHEN, shock in the upper. Without changing lines ZENITH gives rise to the idea of over abundance. It is time to be discriminating toward the profusion that surrounds you. Do not allow that which you have desired to possess you. In order to make progress you must make judgements about what is good for your development and reform or eradicate your excessive attachments.

Hmm

Years ago I lived on a property that had a large barn. My husband set up a workshop in it and when it was all set to go he made a plaque to hang by the entrance and had me consult the I Ching for a hexagram to put on it that would suit the space. I got 55 unchanging. This certainly fit with the idea that this project was the culmination of something he had wanted for many years - his own ideal workspace and he now he had an abundance of resources for everything he wanted to create - but I was also storing my boxes and boxes of stuff in that barn so I have to laugh when I read Wing's interpretation above, "In order to make progress you must make judgements about what is good for your development and reform or eradicate your excessive attachments." I have since moved and my son has lived there for several years. He keeps asking when I'm going to come and get my boxes…

So now my interpretation of 55 unchanging is, "You've got a lot - but what are you going to do with it???"

For me, abundance rarely initially seems like a positive experience, but shares a similar emotional sensation as 28, being overwhelmed. The difference is that unlike adversity of 28 and standing up to it alone, 55 offers shade and shelter, whether it be underbrush or the moon covering the sun, (or a sheltered pilot light inside an oven), yet inwardly still emulating the brightness of the noonday sun. The inner light does not flicker, if protected from the overwhelming heat and blinding brightness of the noonday sun, as with Andrea's example of pinholes looking at a tiny projected crescent sun during an eclipse.

Just for the record, my husband passed away shortly after getting his workshop completed. The Wilhelm translation of Abundance reads

Abundance has success.
The king attains abundance.
Be not sad.
Be like the sun at midday.

He did not have much time left to actually use this space he created. I think that says something about the nature of unchanging hexagrams. They tell what the situation is but indicate not much more may come from the situation.

p.s. He did enjoy just hanging out in his creation and the one project that did get completed was building a beautiful cradle for his newborn grandson - which will now be in the generations. Reading that line "Be not sad" now makes me feel good - like he really did get to achieve and experience the completion of a life goal before 56. Traveling on.

p.p.s. The image talks of deciding lawsuits and carrying out punishments. The trigram Li, clarity, meaning "deciding lawsuits" might also translate to carefully measuring for precise wood working projects and the trigram Chen, shock, might point to hammering nails.

Wow what a lovely example, it bought a tear to my eye. Thank you for this Rosada, and thank you also for leading us into 56...which did have me already thinking on cradles, what with Christmas and nativity scenes of the travelling strangers looking for an inn to stay in.

Love every thought shared :bows:

I got 55 when asked Yi about a memorial for my father. I can't really get credit for the idea or for all the positive outcomes of giving such a healing feeling for family and friends. I had just seen a vision and in a moment of doubt whether was a good idea or not to make it happen, got 55. Additionally to what has been shared here, I feel it's a hex that somehow makes you put the past behind and focus on the future, the 56 journey.

I got 55 for a job offer I got... so many negatives in many aspects, yet I took it as " go for it !". Here again, it's about be decisive and put aside the past and follow your path.

My dog was sick a month, and finally died in the summer.
I did the reading and the answer was Hex 55. It felt comforting.

I got 55 uc twice and both times it meant someone's busy.

First time I received it I asked why X hasn't been on twitter for a while. When I spoke to her later she said she was totally overwhelmed with school and work at the moment. The second time I asked why Y isn't picking up her mobile phone. When she called me back later she explained she was outside, quite busy feeding animals and stuff.

My cat needs daily medicine mixed into canned food. Getting her to eat all of it is frequently a challenge. (I do remove other food a while before medicine time so she'll have an appetite, I use food that has a lot of gravy or juice, and I mix the medicine in just a small amount of food so she can easily eat it.)

So yesterday when I put the dish beside her on the sofa she ran away from it as if it was horribly vile. (She's eaten her medicine in that flavor of food many times, so I know she likes it well enough.)

I wailed to Yi, "[Name of cat] won't eat the food with the [name of medicine] in it!!"

Yi gave me 55 unchanging.

Abundance, cornucopia, eclipses hiding the sun...I had visions of having to throw it away and try again with other flavors[SUP]*[/SUP]...putting several doses of medicine down the drain...cat not getting her medicine at all...

[SUP]*[/SUP][Edited] IOW that's what I thought "cornucopia" might have been telling me - I have lots of flavors of food, so keep trying them until she likes one.

I wailed for a few more minutes and a couple more questions, for no better reason than being at my wits' end.

Meanwhile, my cat had retreated to her pillow in a high place. I put the dish beside her up there (I often give her the food/medicine wherever she happens to be). She gobbled it all up without stopping! Terrific! But...:eek:uch:. I don't really think it was the location, since she's eaten on the sofa many times before.

Of what's been written here, the comment which seems to fit best is maybe Anemos's:

...it's a hex that somehow makes you put the past behind and focus on the future...

and the oracle, as Rosada helpfully quoted, is optimistic. But I'm not having an Aha! moment with this. How does abundance, a cornucopia, and general optimism fit with an eclipse, and how does my example fit any of that? As I said above, I initially expected a quite different and not-good outcome when I got 55.

Just putting it here as one more entry :).

P.S. I suppose it may have just been a quirky momentary thing on the sofa? Maybe she was lost in thought or something, and I startled her when I put the dish in front of her? I don't really think so - my recollection is not that she jumped right away as if startled, but that she took a quick sniff at the food and then dashed off. But who knows. And I don't think 55 says "quirky reaction at a specific instant."

I also think of 55 as 'enough', you can't do any more. Something is full enough now don't mourn, use it.

The very first thought that came to my head was that the cat was satiated with food, was not hungry at the moment you asked. Her body was still digesting previous food. Maybe a short while later she was hungry ? Funny things cats.

I love the way you are protecting the cat's privacy on a public forum

Quite right ! Other cats from your neighbourhood may be reading and her medical history is a private matter.

Historically it was always suspected that dogs and cats were typing posts when their 'owners' were either out, asleep, or in the shower. There'd be the same user name but with a peculiarly different perspective. If a thread shows up "Should I accept or refuse this medicine ?" under the name 'Lisa' shortly I will know who wrote it. The trick is not to let your pet find out your password. But mostly they will have seen you type it in a 100 times.

I think I know what was happening with my cat (see post no. 10 above).

From Bradford Hatcher's Hexagram Names and Core Meanings (thank you, Brad :)):

(underlining mine)
This is the sort of surfeit of good fortune that raises the comment "Be careful what you wish for." This Gua depicts the (usually short) period of time spent at the Zenith of prosperity, amidst an excess of busyness and confusion, and just before things start settling down again. Micromanagement is unthinkable - one barely has time for all of the major Executive Decisions that need to be made. The images of polarized light used in the lines refer to the sort of tunnel vision that is required. There are hopes of getting out of here, or hopes that this will pass soon, but the Sovereign in the Tuan has no choice: this is his element. For those who have taken entheogens, this time may be likened to the very peak of the experience, just before the world begins to resolve again.

I think when I put the food dish in front of my cat, she was momentarily overwhelmed by having it shoved at her (I didn't mean it like that, but I can see how that could have been her perception :(). Once she escaped to her high place and settled down, she realized she actually was hungry, and then she ate.

I'm still not sure how to get that idea out of the text, or what it has to do with an eclipse. I can understand the idea that abundance might be a mixed blessing - the more you have, the more decisions you have to make about what to do with it and how to manage it. The oracle says:

‘Abundance, creating success.
The king is present to it.
Do not mourn.
A fitting sacrifice at noon.’
(Hilary's translation)

Maybe something like "if you want to be successful with your abundance, you must handle it like a king and take charge - don't be afraid or wish you didn't have to deal with it" ?

Not sure, though. Often when a specific reading "clicks" for me, the texts make more sense...this time they don't. I understand my reading because of Bradford's explanation, but I don't understand how he came up with it.

Maybe this is a hexagram where you have to know the historical story. Hilary explains in her commentary that King Wen had just made final preparations for war, and then he suddenly died. His son Wu was thrust into the position of having to take over - it's understandable that he would feel overwhelmed and want to hide away and mourn. The eclipse was apparently a synchronistic sign that instead he was obligated to proceed and overthrow the "darkness" of the enemy (if I'm correctly understanding what Hilary wrote).

Okay...but then where does abundance come in? How could being on the brink of war, your leader having just died, be called "abundance"? Bradford says "this time may be likened to the very peak of the experience," which makes sense - but I would not call the peak of a bad experience "abundance." I can understand (as a separate matter) how abundance might be overwhelming, but I wouldn't call that "abundance," I'd call it "feeling overwhelmed."

I can also see how abundance might hopefully follow, as it did for my cat when she settled down and ate her lunch, and as it did when Wu was victorious. But is hexagram 55 about the nicely-settled aftermath? Isn't it about the chaotic, overwhelming moment before that? Plus, you may or may not know that abundance will follow. That would depend on circumstances, wouldn't it? It's easy to see the abundance in a full dish of food, but in Wu's story the war wasn't fought yet, and they didn't know they'd win.

Well wait...there was the eclipse sign, and Hilary writes that they did a divination which was presumably favorable...maybe that's the key right there. They did know they'd win, and their challenge was to do what they had to do to get there. Maybe in all cases of hexagram 55, the abundance is known?

[Edited: Shouldn't say "all," of course...I guess I don't really mean there's always an external reason to be sure abundance will follow; Trojina's poetry thread example wouldn't fit that. Maybe when hexagram 55 is your reading, abundance is either present right now (but there may be problems in managing it), or abundance will follow once you've done the things you have to do or gotten past your doubts/anxieties.]

(Am trying to un-confuse myself, sorry.)

Lisa, there is a tradition in China that when one's Father dies the Heir must mourn him at his graveside for 3 years. That may be what the "do not mourn" refers to in the historical example. Not time to mourn, it is time to act as his Father's prepared everything for this moment and he must seize the day, there is no time to lose. Here the Prince is suddenly presented with all kinds of sudden independence, power, decisions and responsibilities and it may take him a moment to get his bearings before he can act. Your cat may have similarly felt a bit claustrophobic presented with the food and needed a moment to calm down. It is hard to eat or get down to work if you haven't got your balance or "sea legs" in a situation yet. Once you do however, the hex indicates success as you have been prepared for the moment and so has your environment, and the foundation which you stand on.

Oh my goodness, Lavalamp, you replied to that very long, rambling post I forgot I'd written? - thank you. Yes, I can see how it fits to describe it as getting your balance or "sea legs," getting your bearings, taking a moment to make sure of your preparation (I really should come up with the occasional example that isn't about my cat...).

I have been having a very un characteristic sort out - dr clutter but mostly sorting. Putting things in their place getting rid if things that I no longer need. I am on a roll - working with great enthusiasm. Photos tonight - all quite emotional really. I am feeling quite overwhelmed by it all actually - but in a nice sort of way. Too much of everything. Queuing tea pots - books - bed linen. ..
I asked how should I feel tonight and got hex 55uc

I liked Rosadas comment about her barn ..

Quoting past self

I wouldn't like to try to narrow down the 55uc experience too much. If I received it in regard to a smaller mundane matter I'd generally feel that there was already enough of whatever is required to go ahead. The sun is as bright as it will ever get at noon. Things are ready. It's time to act, time to express.

I found another sense of 55 uc the other day. I had lingering feelings of sadness following something that hurt me and I simply asked Yi for help with that. 'Sadness over xxx event ?' 55uc. At first I felt I had no answer although of course I could not ignore the words of the judgement

'The king attains abundance.
Be not sad.
be like the sun at midday'

(Wilhelm)

How could I ignore that when I ask of sadness and get 'be not sad' as an answer ? Yet I was still a bit flummoxed. Why ? If I felt sad about xxx why should I not be ? The Image gave me the sense of no time to hang about with this. From Hilary's book

'Thunder and lightening culminate as one:
Abundance.
A noble one decides legal proceedings and
brings about punishment'

Punishment ? Legal proceedings ? I carried the reading around for a while all the time with a growing sensation bought on from the reading that I didn't have time to stay in sad feelings because I have things to do. In 55 it's time to 'march out' . Sadness can at times sap energy. Whilst it is at times unavoidable, a part of life and human experience at this particular moment it cannot be given too much time. I took it as time to end the 'mourning', be not sad and go forth in to the things needing to be done. I could also see it as that experience that gave rise to the sadness had already reached it's maximum effect so time to 'be not sad, be like the sun at midday'.

A mundane experience with 55UC

I asked for advice/outlook for the day? I don't often do that, it was just idle curiosity. And cast 55UC.

My mother was visiting, and on the last day, I took her to lunch at a beach club "be not sad, be like the sun at midday".

Then I realised that the table we were seated at was 55 - a wink from the Iching:)

We had a lovely time by the pool until about 3pm, then suddenly, a massive storm broke out. "Thunder and lightning came at once", and an abundance of waterfall. We were glad to have enjoyed the mid day sun!

How is that for a 55UC day? Funny how a cast can play out in so many small ways.

I cast hexagram 55 in the last couple of days in relation to work,
We have been through quite a tough time of late, working really hard however people paying really late. This has built up and now we are reaping the rewards. It has come at good time with Xmas approaching.

I also have a really good product to push just before Xmas basically its an automated social media service, many people in the trades industry's dont have time to be posting on social media after working all day. The service is going to be useful I believe.

Its interesting that Trojina had a dream related to 55, as the night I cast 55 I also had a dream, I dream't I was on Airforce 1 with the Trump team and was being shown all these secrets to business. There was this Mc Flurry machine on board pouring out huge amounts of delicious ice cream. I said to someone can you get unlimited Ice cream here and someone said, "Yea you are on Airforce 1 and you can have anything you want" (Abundance). Donald Trump was giving me advice personally on social media marketing, I was really having fun.

I am finding with the cast it can advise that you have a strong sense of awareness or lucid thoughts. It feels like finishing a jigsaw puzzle, interesting that there was a light bulb in Trogina's dream. Like the cartoons when the light bulb goes on, like aaah haaa, thats whats going on, or aaaah thats how you do it.

Some text from the James Dekorne site is interesting.

Suddenly, with a roar like that of a waterfall, I felt a stream of liquid light entering my brain through the spinal cord ... The illumination grew brighter and brighter, the roaring louder, I experienced a rocking sensation and then felt myself slipping out of my body, entirely enveloped in a halo of light ... I was no longer myself, or to be more accurate, no longer as I knew myself to be, a small point of awareness confined in a body, but instead was a vast circle of consciousness in which the body was but a point, bathed in light and in a state of exaltation and happiness impossible to describe.
Gopi Krishna --Kundalini, the Evolutionary Energy in Man

I am not only getting payments in, but learning how to run my business much more effectively. Learning how to free up my time to make more money. Thats kind of what my dream was about I think.

On top it, we are getting the Xmas tree out today being December 1st 2018. (More Abundance)

I can see how the commentary relates the reading to the sun at noon, you can see things you may have never seen before. Its a new sense of awareness or can be on the positive side.

So not only can you experience physical abundance but there is the lucid side to the readings,

There are some really cool experiences on this thread, I love the one above me. How literal can you be?
I am glad I am able to contribute and have a positive experience with it.

The sad thing is a friend of mine's dog, they have discovered has a tumour on the liver. He really really loves this dog. Funny how one person is doing well and someone else is having a bad time. Thats always intrigued me, especially in a close circle.

There is advice also or a warning of things can (OR WILL) decline unless preparations are made. Let the good times roll I guess however perhaps I should be putting some nuts away for the winter.

kinda wish i would have read through the whole thread, as well as wilhelm's commentary, before proceeding with anything in relation to the situation i asked about... but hey - i was so full of myself at the time that i didn't even pay enough attention to the hex i casted and just went on with what felt right, rather than actually listen to yi... yet, the casting and my decision turned out the same thing? ;)

i asked what's best to do, as been having a really weird falling out with a friend of mine, whom i've known for years - but lately, somehow naturally, started letting go of toxic relations and anything that i feel doesn't serve my self-development or growth... so i immediately took 55 uc as a whole for a confirmation that it's the right time and a thing to do - to just trust my vision and clarity of mind and continue with making my point, even if the other side cannot interpret it right or won't be able to read it with enough composure or even understanding. eventually things lead to completely blocking that contact, as i simply couldn't handle it anymore (i've had it up to here / passed the boiling point - yet another image of fullness)... i do recognise however the arrogance involved on both sides that got us there (mentioned in the very last line and its comment) as well as our egos at play (which i imagine being illustrated by the curtain within the lines - always loved that metaphor). not sure the person does, or ever will admit to the arrogance on their part and i am tired of being apologetic and always carrying the load - but here comes the image of an eclipse, i believe... once it's over, i guess the moon moves on back to the shade of night and, hopefully, the sun regains its brightness; they seemed so close for a while, almost one, a night within a day, but each had to move its own way...
would i have reacted differently had i read the casting in more depth upfront? hmm, in hindsight i probably could have prepared better and avoided the "misfortune" of getting completely out of touch with a friend. but then i would not have developed this insight for myself and to share here... and maybe this was just the natural progression of things that simply had to finally happen?

Hi all,

I had a recent experience with 55 uc that I wanted to share, as it was very similar to other posts in this thread. Thank you to everyone who contributed here as it helped me feel clear about my interpretation.

I, and quite a few colleagues at work were having ongoing difficult experiences. Much of it related to a particular manager.

After many weeks of focusing on how I needed to approach the difficulties, I eventually asked the Yi "What do I need to know about [manager]". Answer: 55uc

I took this to mean she was overwhelmed, had too many responsibilities, was trying to take them all on diligently but couldn't really see what was going on. Not long after the reading, she disappeared on some personal leave. The other managers have been I bit quiet about it. She's been off for two weeks now. Much to the relief of staff.

Just remembered I also got 55uc about a week later, when asking what I should focus on in my first hypnotherapy session that I was about to experience that day.

I was at the end of a week of annual leave, was feeling pretty good, but yes, was overwhelmed and in the dark about the previous weeks/months difficulties and how to deal with them.

The hypnotherapy session ended up being largely about responsibilities - when not to take them on, handing them on where appropriate even if the other person didn't do anything with them, etc.

The manager went on leave the same week I got back.
