This is the continution of the discussion of Unchanging Hexagrams and our experiences with them, delineating each as a separate thread to make them easy to find in future. We move ahead here with Hexagram 7 Unchanging. Anybody coming upon these discussion is encouraged to add their thoughts and experiences at any point in the future.

There is a separate thread in Exploring Divination for general ideas on unchanging castings entitled "Your Experiences with Unchanging Castings Hexagram 0," so please enter anything that isn't specific to a particular unchanged hexagram over there.

Beginning this discussion I feel somewhat at a loss for a single good example of Hexagram 7 Unchanging. I can't think of one iconic example. What comes to mind is the general feeling when I see this casting turn up that I need to get organised, discover who my allies and associates may be in the situation, and very critically, pull together a plan that we agree on. In my experience, it's a practical, strategic, answer that I'm going to be relying upon. And somewhere in the scenario I will have allies [maybe real people, maybe some kind of skills or assets] that are going to come to bear. In its unchanging form, hexagram 7 seems to mean that this has to be the first consideration and the starting place because it is my strongest suit by far.

I got 7 unchanging twice.

Last autumn I was a bit desperate because there had so much to be done and at the same time there were troublesome people and hardly any help, so I simply asked "advice, pleeese!"
It worked, I concentrated on organizing, asked everyone to do what he/she was good at, did the same myself, and most of all did my best to stay far away from panic.

The other occasion was almost a year ago. I was wondering about the oracle, the way of casting. I always use the coins, for me yarrow is too complicated. By the time I have counted everything, my question has turned vague or sometimes disappeared.
I took the oracles on my website as example. There are three, yarrow full, yarrow simple, and coins.
For yarrow full: 7 unchanging
Yarrow simple: 30/1,3,6 to 16
Coins: 14/4,5 to 9.

To me it meant that yarrow full was a good and thorough way to consult the Yi.
Yarrow simple is for a fast answer when you're in a hurry or when it doesn't matter that much. One of the meanings of #16 is sight-seeing. Easy way to bring some clarity.
I liked the third one most. Bring order in your own little farm, and do that with all the talents you got. And if you have a farm, you don't have time for counting sticks anyway. Count the sheep and feed the chickens...

Searched my journal for 7 unchanging... and found one from June 2010. I'd changed my way of eating, lost a stone, and still had something like a stone and a half to lose. I was caught between being proud of myself and worried that it might stop working, or I might overdo it and hurt myself somehow - and mostly scared silly that I might 'lapse' and gain it all back with interest. Not really trusting and believing I was really doing this and would really carry on doing it. I have a bit of a history of making big resolutions and then falling flat, and after doing that a few dozen times you do get afraid to invest yourself too much in a new thing, for fear of what will happen to your self-esteem if you fail.

I wrote,
Hard to believe in my 9 1/2 stone fit strong energetic lean self. Hard to believe I can really get there, or that I'm doing enough to get there. Still not quite confident it's possible.
- and looking at that now, weighing exactly 9 1/2 stone, fit, strong and energetic if not precisely 'lean', it's quite a surprise to see.

Anyway... my question back then was 'Overall advice for moving forward with the diet, exercise and health change?'
The answer was 7 unchanging. I took it as both a pep talk and a reminder not to become completely obsessive about it.

From a couple of years earlier: advice for creating the Yijing course?
7 unchanging.
I focussed and got on with it - not much else to say!

Maybe when 7 is unchanging it emphasises the idea of focus - and on the doing, not the goal. I didn't need to worry about whether I could believe in being 9.5 stone or not, I just needed to go out that morning for a walk.

I think focus is a big element Hilary. And the aspect of getting out there to do, not just thinking about it. This is definitely an active hexagram, not a sedentary one. As Lise was saying, you have to martial your forces, and then you have to set the example. It's that endless, step and step and step, as you put the plan into place, build the foundation in a way you've never built it before. Like your taking control of your body and sculpting it the way you want -- finding that with the million steps from here to there you can actually DO it.

I also think 7 unchanging can refer to large organisations, governments, social systems. I think it can be referring you to your place within that. Well we try to forget it but we do all exist within that framework of large existing systems. I can see 7 coming up for example as pointing to hospitals,

I have asked before I think of where I could get X from or how I could do Y. I think 7 has meant applying to a larger body...because my query is belonging really within that larger organised system...for example our taxation system, hospitals, prisons, schools....universities, colleges etc. If the question is around how to achieve something practical hex 7 unchanging can point to an existing organised system you could benefit from or use.

Hex 7 is 'The Army' Armies are mostly deployed in maintaining order rather than fighting battles...they are there as ready defense should invasion occur. Its easy to see legal systems, health services put in place by governments as being depicted by hex 7 unchanging. I have also known it refer to smaller organisations with one goal, its a collective isn't it. A collective goal or system workingin an organised almost miltitary way and when you apply to gain benefit from it you have to accord with its systems. This generally means filling out forms and things like that

I have also found it can very much mean that once in it you are carried by it....you will is really part of a collective decision that formed it

Actually I had it a few times recently re joining a regional committee for a national organisation. I felt like whilst I had an input I was also being swept along by the machinations of the whole organsiation. One might think that was more of a sense of 54....but the feeling ....of 7 does have that collective army type feel of marching...or what marching signifies. A very defined destination/function

The character shi, army, also means "leader". It is probably a picture of a leaders skirt. So I agree with the large organization, the big system, but I think in other answers it can point at yourself as being the one in charge, who has to lead the army into battle.

When I had so much to do, it told me to discipline myself, to simply start doing what I had to do, without fussing about being able to or not, the lack of time, the problems.

Mm. Even if you are leading the army into battle, I think that's your function in the moment. You may or may not be the one who decided on the army's mission or goals or what-have-you - and actually, whether you were or not, now is not really the time to think about them. The focus is all on GTD (Getting Things Done). Maybe that's a big enough umbrella to cover 'getting self organised' and 'being part of big organisation' readings?

 you always have to be clear about where you are headed in 7 don't you ? You have to have the goal in mind even via a big organisation. You could be out of step with the organisation (7.1) or it may be led by inept managers (7.3) but having the goal firmly in mind is always essential. You have to believe in the worth of the action you are taking.

I always hated that saying "Ours is not to reason why......"

I was casting loads of hexagram 7s yesterday, one after another, and ended with 7.2 last night and reading the comments here on the essence of hex 7 is illuminating. I was thinking it meant someone else was leading the way and strategising in the situation, but it's just occured to me that believing in the worth of what I myself am doing, organising and policing myself, keeping the overall goal in mind, is probably more to the point. The "big organisation" is reorganising my entire life for the better -- and nobody can plan and do that like i can! That's the "one goal" Trojan has mentioned. In other words -- keep what you are doing tight and to the point.

As for the underlined Trojan -- well, it's Tennyson isn't it? And loads of Brits dying in a sinkhole in the Crimea -- no wonder you are sensitised! ;)

Searching for these 'unchanging hexagram' threads to create a sticky list of them, I turned up two older threads about 7 unchanging in 'Exploring Divination': one from Ginnie and also for a relationship.

I felt I was coming down with a cold, and asked a question about how to avoid becoming sicker. The answer was 7UC. Discipline, marshalling resources for a battle (with germs), like war, poisonous drugs as a last resort. And I had an aha moment (shared that reading in the aha sticky as well): in that context, 7UC is about marshalling an army of antibodies to fight off the invading germs - ie strengthening or generating an immunity.

I think next time I get 7UC, I will remember that concept - the focused, disciplined effort directed at a very clear goal.

Interesting insights on 7uc. I just cast it asking "What am I supposed to do today?" and in thinking about it, I'm scattered thinking of various possibilities rather than focusing on any particular goal or task which might ultimately achieve more than thinking of everything else.

I received hexagram 7 when I asked the question about my son and whether he is doing enough to lead a good life. The more I read the casting of Hexagram 7 without change lines I understand better. Your posts here are very helpful. Thank you

I asked if 2016 grassroots Green Party U.S, Presidential Candidate Jill Stein would be allowed to participate in the National Debates this year to help put her on a more level playing field with the Corporatist Candidates and received H 7 UC. I guess we will know by the end of September what the significance of this cast is in this case.

a situation has arisen at my son's school. A student who is nearly 20 is in the same year as my son aged 17. He has a lot of power, influence and is allowed more tolerance than most - indeed he should not really be there at all. My son wanted me to tke him to a party - I said no, and it transpires that he has gone through a range of senior staff to get him access to a lift.. I mentioned my concern to the house parent and this is now causing my son grief I do not want an adult influencing my son in a boarding environment - not good. Sadly the house parent has informed the students that it was me - and I work at the school.

I got hex 7uc for how this situation has happened.
definitely part of an institution, not good at all

I have received 7 unchanging about a university job I have been offered in a dangerous part of the world. The university is new and seems to have little structure in place. Yes, an institution, requiring fortitude and organization to get it right. I see I am being warned, but the outcome is uncertain. It depends on whether I am up to the challenge. That will have to be another question.

I liked what Bradford wrote on 7 from this thread

You certainly need a broader meaning for the metaphor than "the Army."
In fact, that translation of 師 is itself misleading, because what's being described is much closer to a "ready militia" than the standing armies we usually see. If anything it's more like the Swiss Army. This is a hidden force that's ready to respond when needed, but for now only the training exists. No swords are being rattled. I'd say most of this relationship hasn't shown itself yet, and maybe importantly, all the hidden defenses of the people involved are still unexpressed. Nothing will be known by expectations, only by getting involved. My guess is they should give it some time to play out in reality and not rush into anything.

This makes sense of a lot of my 7uc castings. Underground river, so much not yet shown but forces being gathered

7uc

Hi everyone, thank you for all your insights on 7uc. I am a bit puzzled however, that this Hexagram is very seldom read in a more beligerant way (I guess indeed that the Yi Jing is never meant to be beligerant). Has nobody ever gotten 7uc in a situation that needed to "stand up and fight"? A year ago I was fed up of trying to talk my ex-wife into having shared custody of our son (I had it 5 days every two weeks at that point). My question was "should I be firmer in this discussion and take it to the courts"? (in the country I live, by law, any parent that asks for shared custody will have it granted -except if this harms the kid of course). Anyhow, the person that made this reading was reading this as "be open, endure this, be disciplined in order to see what prevents you to understand and speak openly to your ex-wife". Still to this day I feel that this 7 could have been read as "yes, mobilize your armies and fight (in court) for this"...What is your take on this?

I don't think there is any need to delete it, it is still your experience and besides others may wish to discuss it :)
