Dear community
I asked the question 'What is happening?' (Or, more precisely, WTF is happening?)
I received Hex 16 (changing lines 1,2,3,5 and 6)
1.5 years ago we moved into our current house in order to foster. 7 weeks ago a foster child, after much planning, wanting and waiting, came into our lives.
Everything changed.
Fri - mon just passed for 4 nights she (nearly 9 years old) was violent, threatening and uncontrollable for around 4 hrs. She hit our birth daughter (11 yrs) and threatened to hurt her with a metal pole.
Everything has changed again.
I can see no outcome to this situation that seems OK.
The reading feels so spot on, so dramatic to me. I can hardly read it, but the words seem to seep in regardless (Hilary's book.)
I would appreciate your interpretations of the Reading please. I am feeling very vulnerable so please mind not to judge.

I could give more context:
before the 4 nights it was going well, attaching together, incredibly intense, difficult, draining but often felt lovely, warm, full of potential. Agency may decide to remove her. Partly I would feel relief at this. Mostly guilt. I am still reeling from the shock of 7 intense weeks and then the drama of abuse.

received Hex 16 (changing lines 1,2,3,5 and 6)

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Setting aside the Yi for a moment, are you or the agency aware of this foster child's past, and does it include violence, neglect or abuse? If so, you need to take that information seriously and take it to heart.

As to the reading, Hex. 16 has the trigram (three line figure) Earth below, and trigram Thunder above.

With three moving lines, Earth is completely unbalanced: your attempt at care and providing a home have gone completely awry. Thunder above, with two moving lines might represent your foster child, and when Thunder is unbalanced (here with two moving lines), it can act or react suddenly and even with anger or rage.

I think it's important to know that one quality of Earth is that it works with what it is given to work with. And so you are not responsible for not being able to create the home and family you want, if you were given a child with a violent or abusive past to begin with.

With all the moving lines (1,2,3,5,6) this turnes to Hex. 1 - Heaven; also called The Creative, and Action .... Here you are being called (advised, told) to act like a leader, like a strong king and provide direction ....

Like all good leaders / kings, your first goal is to keep your subjects - your family safe! And you cannot let your guilt, passivity, or feeling bad stop you from this!

If there were a way to provide safety and a good home for your own child, while at the same time dealing with your foster child - than you might try this. But that really depends on what this child's history is, and how much you're willing to chance more harm and violence - especially towards your own child.

I hope that's of some use to you; and sorry I don't have a way to fix all this. And again, stepping away from the Yi, I'd suggest that regardless of what you decide, that you and your family - all of you - seek counseling or therapy to help heal from this.

Hello there

I'm moved by your devotion and sense of responsibility both toward your family and also your community. Whatever comes up, you're a kind soul and there's no debate in that. You recieve no judgments from me. I'm just an observer putting together the reading and your scenario...

My personal approach toward changing lines is that when i recieve 5 of them i feel the original hexagram is somehow exhausted. So i just consider the remaining unchanged line and the future hexagram it's making!

In my opinion your reading is: 16.4 to 2
The Changing line says: Enthusiasm without doubt = gathering friends. / DO NOT DOUBT.

The message here is to remain confident. Your original path is true.

According to diviation.com:
Line 4
Great works spring from those who can awaken enthusiasm in others through their own self-confidence and decisiveness. A person who is sincere and without doubts attracts others naturally. The power of such a person grows by sharing power and responsibility with others. As a result, others are willing to cooperate, becoming trustworthy allies and supporters.

I feel the hexagram is encouraging you to think why did you decide to foster-care in the first place and see past your current anxiety. It's also motivating you to seek help - professional help - and stop feeling helpless! A team of counselor, psychologist, social worker and psychiatrist as well as even your distant relatives can act as your support since all of them are moved by you and your inner motives. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Don't bear a mountain of pain and responsibility all by yourself. Let your enthusiasm be an inspiration to others. Also let circumstances determine how you perform your tasks, and perform them with love and dedication. In between, take the time to reflect on what's completed and to plan for the next task. This doing will give you peace and satisfaction.

Again from divination website :
About the future Hexagram - 2; Great receptivity attracts great gifts and great blessings. A natural responsiveness attracts success through support and perseverance rather than bold action. Thus, a wise person demonstrates strength like a powerful but gentle mare.

Another insight from cafeausoul.com on hexagram 2:
Stand in the moment and observe your reaction to what unfolds around you. When you stop reacting, you will find yourself simply doing, and you can move forward with a new sense of ease and power.

To me the answer is cristal clear, accept the situation and seek out for help, but it all depends on you and your understanding of iching. I hope my insight makes sense to you and this comment finds you well. I'm channelizing lots of love to you and your family.

Take care. Stay safe. 🤗

My ... approach toward changing lines is that when i recieve 5 of them i feel the original hexagram is somehow exhausted. So ... In my opinion your reading is: 16.4 to 2.

I can understand the idea of many changing lines meaning the hexagram is 'exhausted' but the reading - as is - is already providing a way of dealing with this 'exahustion': that all these moving lines change to Hex. 1.

I take issue mainly because you completely changed the reading that Roma77 got. Then again, if this is your way of dealing with multiple moving lines ... then that's how you've decided to work with many moving lines.

But even with Hex. 2 with two Earth trigrams - it is about caring, and it is also about making things real, and dealing with situations in a down-to-earth way. And Earth can only work with what it's been given to work with. Roma still has to weigh - and make decisions - about how caring he/she can (or needs to) be, versus what is going to actually work in their situation!

PS - as an aside, I looked at the divination-dot-com website. What Paul O'Brien is offering is his 'interpretation' of the Yi, not a translation: he completely removes the words and images from the Yi, and instead replaces this with what he thinks it means (or should mean), but not what it acutally says (words) or shows us (through images).

I personally find that very suspect - I want to see and taste ice cream; I don't want Paul's description or opinion of what it looks and tastes like.

Best, D

The oscillation of life is unceasing. High, low, high low. Valleys and troughs.

1.4
When the dragon takes flight and soars above, the troughs below appear abysmal. Air currents will fluctuate. The dragon maintains flight through gentle countermotions.

Untitled.png

No matter how seemingly dramatic and dangerous your circumstance is - the Ching has returned with Enthusiasm. The hexagram as a whole communicates a blasé and often offensive "cheer up".

16.6 demands our attention. Fostering a child is extreme karma. An altruistic act that cannot go unnoticed. Having initiated this action demands responsibility. Regardless of context: contemplating handing the child back over shows deluded enthusiasm towards the task which was undertaken.

There will be more outbursts from the adopted child. They will be as rhythmic in nature as the troughs illustrated above. Parental guidance is required to develop youth. Who are you?

Please make another Ching reading and post the results below (if you desire). I'd like to offer one additional interpretation. No query is required. The second reading will remain contextually relevant.

The exhausted analogy is correct in my experience, but the focus moves into the new hexagram. You'll notice in my interpretation above: Only 16.6 and 1.4 are considered. These are the relevant changing lines, with the later being more potent as the "exhausted" hexagram is now behind us.

16.2 (Enthusiasm without doubt) is therefore the only irrelevant line. Which accurately correlates with the querents communicated sense of guilt.

My method of deciding which changing line is noble is based on Richard Wilhelm and James Legge works. You're free to label this method however you want to... You're even capable of calling the whole iching notion "arbitrary". Getting defensive won't take us anywhere :)

Besides, after years of practicing iching this method works best for me. It literally cut to the chase and hit me with reality every time.

All the divination schools are based on personal intuition and how each individual can have a different understanding. I offered my insight. That's all.

Why should I only consider these lines? And what makes any of these the 'more relevant' or 'only irrelevant' lines? This all feels like something you've decided for yourself - sort of self-fulfilling.

D.
According to Alfred Huang, who wrote The Complete I Ching, in the case of a Gua (Hexagram) with more than 1 moving line, not all moving lines are to be consulted. The rules for consulting a moving line are:

  1. If there are two moving lines - one Yin and the other Yang - consult only the Yin moving line
  2. If the two moving lines are both Yin or both Yang, consult the lower one
  3. If there are three moving lines, consult only the middle one
  4. If there are four moving lines, consult only the upper of the two non-moving lines
  5. If there are five moving lines, consult only the other, non-moving line
  6. If six lines are all moving, consult the Decision of the new Gua, the approached Gua
  7. Since there is a seventh invisible line in the first and second Gua, Qian and Kun, for these Gua consult the seventh Yao Text, called All Nines or All Sixes

My method of deciding which changing line is noble is based on Richard Wilhelm and James Legge works.

Please see resource Rules of Interpretation.

James Legge makes no mention of interpretation rules in his translation (or in the copy I have).

Richard Wilhelm, almost as an afterthought, includes some brief instructions on interpreting the results of consulting the I Ching. He does not mention sources or any sort of justification for the method. Richard Rutt, in Zhouyi, calls it “a popular form of the Song tradition passed on by Wilhelm and Blofeld, who both learnt it from Chinese friends.”

When a hexagram consists entirely of nonmoving lines, the oracle takes into account only the idea represented by the hexagram as a whole, as set down in the Judgment by King Wên and in the Commentary on the Decision by Confucius, together with the Image.
If there are one or more moving lines in the hexagram thus obtained, the words appended by the Duke of Chou to the given line or lines are also to be considered.
Furthermore, the movement, i.e., change in the lines, gives rise to a new hexagram, the meaning of which must also be taken into account. For instance, when we get hexagram 56 showing a moving line in the fourth place we must take into account not only the text and the Image belonging to this hexagram as a whole, but also the text that goes with the fourth line, and in addition both the text and the Image belonging to hexagram 52.
Thus hexagram 56 would be the starting point of a development leading, by reason of the situation of the nine in the fourth place and the appended counsel, to the final situation, i.e., hexagram 52.
In the second hexagram the text belonging to the moving line is disregarded.

When it comes to debating rules of interpretation. The Well never changes. I will not assume to know with certainty - but whatever the correct answer is can only remain unchanging.

My method of deciding which changing line is noble is based on Richard Wilhelm and James Legge works.

I am familar with Wilhelm; and have recently spent time with his Book III, where he makes extensive use of trigrams - which I also used in my interpretation. However, I don't remember Wilhelm saying that if we have five moving lines, we should change the reading and base it on the one unmoving line. If he did, I'd wecome you telling me where he said this (e.g. page number).

And Wilhelm, maintained the imagery of the Yi, so he - and most everyone else - gives us:

61.2: A crane calling in the shade. Its young answers it. I have a good goblet. I will share it with you.

As opposed to O'Brien's non-imagery: A clear, radiant unselfishness at the core of your being is a vital source of power and influence. It spreads as surely as ripples on a pond when a stone is tossed into the center. A sincere reliance on your own integrity generates supreme good fortune.

As you said, to each his own, but I'd rather have a crane calling to its young, and people sharing a good goblet (of wine I can imagine!).

Hello;

Hexagram 16 is called enthusiasm and hexagram 1 is potential. I guess the reading shows the potential of a disorder that affects emotions- hyperactivity? Autism?

I have come to believe the Huang/Yin method as correct.

Only certainty is duality of existence. Only consistent is change.

When we generate an image bottom-to-top, the lower hexagram is formed (now present) before the upper hexagram is known (uncertain future). Thus hexagram 16 Thunder above Earth can also be contemplated as Earth before Thunder.

Similarly, the motion of 6 and 9 is evident. These are changing lines - in the process of transformation. Yang becomes Yin (or Yin becomes Yang).

There is the present - and there is the myriad of initiated/projected future uncertainties. Changing lines articulate a linear narrative. I will remind the student that the Ching itself (as written) was a series of mnemonics recorded at the insistence of a king who desired to understand what the sages knew intuitively.

Thus any and all readings can be diluted to the linearly moving interplay of Yin/Yang in its dual form, bigram form, trigram form and inevitable first and second hexagram form. Words are unnecessary.

Don't think - feeeeeeeel.

When a line is changing... it is its position in the hexagram and forward motion that has resulted in the mnemonic paraphrase written. Thus we do not read the text of any changed lines in the second hexagram as the required story would need to be re-contemplated.

Why the uppermost non-changing line of the second hexagram? Perhaps water fills to the rim before flowing forward again? It is also the most recent line that does not yet have a future uncertainty. While the lower line has its counterpoints in any unchanging line above it.

According to Alfred Huang, who wrote The Complete I Ching, in the case of a hexagram with more than 1 moving line, not all moving lines are to be consulted.

What Mr. Huang shared here (and at least some of what Russell Cottrell also shares) is his version of the 'Nanjing Rules', a set of rules which were develop by young scholars in Nanjing in the 1920's (about 3,000 years after the Yi was written). They based these 'rules' on their evaluation of divination examples in the Zuo Commentary (from around 5th - 4th centuries BC).

(It should be noted that the title of Mr. Huang's 'total' book was likely created by his publisher, and even though he was a Taoist Master - as the book cover says - his translation is mainly (but not entirely) Confucian in nature.)

According to Richard Rutt's version of these rules (The Zhouyi, p170), Roma's reading should be 16.6 > 35.

And so we end up with a least a half dozen (or more) ways of altering the reading. I suppose that all the variations you, and I, and others have shared reveal some wisdom - but none of these 'rules' has any ultimate higher authority associated with them. None of them are the 'correct' or 'right' way of reducing multiple moving lines and turning them into another reading altogether.

For me, what Roma shared is 16.1.2.3.5.6 > 1, and that's what I decided to work with.

Thus we do not read the text of any changed lines in the second hexagram ....

Yes, what you are saying about not reading the lines in the second hexagram is sort of Oracle 101 (as described by Wilhelm and dozens of others). I didn't do that, and no one else did either that I can see. However, I think you are the one who also said:

"16.6 and 1.4 are considered."

So now you have me confused: do we not consider a line or lines in Hex. 1 or do we?

We still have have one foot partially submerged in the first hexagram, thus I will always consider the most relevant (topmost) changing line of our "exhausted" hexagram as the change is not yet complete.

I'm adding a pinch of that previous hexagram to my final interpretation. Deluded Enthusiasm has caused fluctuation in the dragon's wavering flight above an abyss.

No blame. But fourth line is so very close to the correct fifth position. Querent should maintain course and keep flying. When we are soaring in the heavens, the rocky valleys and deep troughs are no longer perceivable. The earth below becomes consistent in level.

We still have have one foot partially submerged in the first hexagram ....

That's all very nice, but it doesn't answer the question, nor address the conflicting instructions you've conjured up for us. In fact, you're just adding to the confusion:

... we only look at the line in the first hexagram, or ... we look at lines in both hexagrams, or ... we have one foot partially submerged in the first hexagram, or ....

Any other variations you'd care to share with us, that we can feel our way through?

The question was, "What is happening?" not "What should be done about it?" so I'm inclined to agree with Marybluesky that 16.1.2.3.5.6-1 is a comment on the child's behavior rather than advice as to whether you should continue to foster her. The hexagram seems to describe a surge of energy. Interesting line 4 is omitted in this reading as this line describes someone who is controlling the flow of enthusiasm which leads to a gathering of supportive friends - thus perhaps this line being absent could be saying the child is NOT in control of these explosive moods and they certainly aren't winning her any friends. I wonder if this is an example of bi-polar behavior? If so you need to get real help - at least a professional diagnosis.

Your first responsibility is to your daughter. (I know you know this but sometimes it helps to have someone else say it too!)

Very interesting question - interesting to me as I’ve worked in a women’s prison, where many of the women came from such a background with multiple homes, abuse, foster care, etc etc, and I’ve also considered fostering but know how tough it will be to help such children. One day!

so without focussing overly closely on the individual lines (so you can disregard my comments if preferred!) it feels like a massive up rush of feelings that can’t be managed. Personality disorder perhaps - inability to manage complex emotions, outbursts of violence. Many people in prison have personality disorder and better establishments help people to manage it and cope with their feelings. Many young people in care have not been fed properly, may have been exposed to drugs, alcohol and inappropriate sexual behaviour/abuse as well as violence. As well as general lack of basic care. All this too often leads to complex behavioural problems, and this is what I see in the 16 lines - inability to control emotions. How you cope with this is another matter - perhaps requiring another question. Hope that helps, good luck, don’t give up 🌈

Your question, about what is happening (not what you should do), shows this. A lot is happening, inside her. Inside the situation. Enthusiasm is about strong feelings, in any direction not just ‘positive’, and hex 1 is about action. I think this is saying that all the extremes are being expressed through a singular very visible action. Maybe you could ask more questions about the help she needs? What your best role in that might be?

This is a very difficult situation. I’m sorry you’re going through it. Who knows what else she has been through in her life. Children are not supposed to have to navigate any of this (I fear a small child getting labeled as ‘violent’ in character, rather than situationally, because she doesn’t have the tools to deal with a situation that most adults wouldn’t even be able to process or handle.) I can only imagine how confused she is and how much emotion she is processing every single moment, both present and past experiences.

You are correct, and for good or ill, I tend to jump to the Yi telling us what the situation is AND advising us on how best to deal with it - and I often see/find this latter part ('what to do') in the resultant trigrams (but also the words) - which in this case include trigrams Heaven above and below (Hex 1).

I do think however, that sometimes just knowing - or seeing clearly - what's going on can suggest to us the correct action or response needed to addresss the situation: I see it as a 'package deal' of sorts.

In the current case - leaving aside the 'fix' for the moment: it seems that Roma77's attempt at creating a caring, loving home for this person has not worked out (lower, very unbalanced Earth), and that this foster child is acting out / reacting in ways that can be unpredictable and may even be harmful - e.g. in anger (upper unbalanced Thunder) ....

If it were me that might be all I need to know about the situation in order to move forward ... , or I still might want advice about how I best deal with, address this situation - and so I often 'throw' that part in as well.

Reards, D

Thank you all for your interpretations. I'm grateful that you took the time. I think with my question 'what's happening' I was also seeking clarity about the way forward, and trying to understand the emotions I'm wrestling with.

I just noticed that in WikiWing Hilary mentions that 16. Enthusiasm can mean getting carried away and losing touch with reality. Also noting that the Image mentions music, I wonder if playing certain healing tones would help? (youtube: Healing frequencies)

'and keep flying' .. I don't really understand..is this not a trough? Interestingly I had a dream I was on a bike that I thought was going to fall into a lake but then it flew to the other shore.
Second reading: 26.1.6>46

Thank you, yes , I do feel sort of helpless. I am also very concerned for our birth daughter and I feel almost torn between the 2 girls. Our foster child who is so needy and who I know we could, with time, really help ...but at what cost to our birth daughter?

What Paul O'Brien is offering is his 'interpretation' of the Yi, not a translation: he completely removes the words and images from the Yi, and instead replaces this with what he thinks it means (or should mean), but not what it acutally says (words) or shows us (through images).

I personally find that very suspect - I want to see and taste ice cream; I don't want Paul's description or opinion of what it looks and tastes like.

Best, D
Yes I am weighing up how caring, warm, empathetic, giving I can be and how that can work in our situation. My husband and I have both been taken to our limits. I'm not sure I can be what I need to be ...

The oscillation of life is unceasing. High, low, high low. Valleys and troughs.

1.4
When the dragon takes flight and soars above, the troughs below appear abysmal. Air currents will fluctuate. The dragon maintains flight through gentle countermotions.

Yes I agree it is extreme karma
The term deluded enthusiasm is very strong. I have a lot of fear around this. I also work in children's mental health, by the way so felt that my skills would be very helpful in turning a foster child's life around. And they have been. If it were not for my own daughter I would not be 'contemplating' ending her placement. And it may not be our decision at the end of all the crisis meetings....

I had a dream I was on a bike that I thought was going to fall into a lake but then it flew to the other shore.
Deliverance.

26.6 - One attains the way of heaven. Success.

Therefore the doubts which have arisen in your heart out of ignorance should be slashed by the weapon of knowledge. Armed with yoga, O Bharata, stand and fight.
