Hey all,

Second post. The first one was brilliantly dramatic.

Having just moved out of a Zen temple, where I lived for 6 months, and being 23, I understandably look at what lies ahead in my life. A relationship that has been confusing and ended in my being, somewhat unconsciously, used as an emotional and physical relief is in a spot that doesn't look like it will clear up any time soon. And honestly, at this point, given the quality and level of my presence for the friendship/more than that, it feels like it is best to set boundaries that do not surrender my own power here. Of course, I played a part in it by choosing to abandon myself and my values to pursue someone unavailable.

I have also been looking at graduate schools in counseling and psychology, or perhaps in some sort of contemplative psychotherapy that also focuses on mind-body medicine. The process of finding previous professors and professionals who will write me a letter of recommendation has begun and it is really a matter of finding the right degree programs and starting to apply. Currently, I work for Parks and Recreation, but it doesn't feel like my calling.

I asked, last night, in the midst of emotional turbulence, "What should I be focusing on now?" and received hexagram 3, Beginning, with lines 1 and 5 changing to 2, the Receptive. I honestly don't know what to make of it.

**As a side note, how do people work with multiple changing lines? Huang has Master Yi's recommendation about ways to only choose one, but it seems to really be counter to the point of the I Ching? Curious if anyone could direct me to something there.**

This morning, I took it a bit slower and formulated a broader question that felt a bit more true. On my mind were graduate school, work, my new living situation, and moving forward in whatever manner with this relationship. I asked, "What is the path forward that benefits me and all my relations?" and received 53, Developing Gradually, as the response.

Seems like patience at the beginning is key here, but I'm hoping there's something deeper I'm missing.

Thank you,
Settan

Whatever you work on will be best manifested when held within a warm nest realizing the qualities of the feminine; yielding, nourishing, receptive and gentle. You are beginning to establish yourself in important new ways and you will be best served in this by being clear in setting out in front of you the goals and standards you are looking to attain (3).

3.1 - be open to the insights of others as well as what calls to you from within.
3.5 - be careful and focus on taking small steps and allow things to unfold rather than jumping ahead with your blindfold on.

Read all the changing lines and weave them in. Wilhelm, LiSe, Karcher, Balkin all give insights into the potential stored in each line position.

53 unchanging speaks to advancing in flexible and adaptable ways, a bit like water penetrating deeply into a gritty old rock formations. The hexagram advocates a bit more than patience, it asks that attention is paid to living a life based in developing personal virtue and stable personal power, such that inferior qualities in self and others become transformed.

... or it might mean something completely different for you.

Take Care

When using "Search pages and blog posts" (the first option, at the top), it works well to type in, for instance, "hexagram 3" in quotation marks.

Don't miss the hexagram search link at the bottom: https://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/hexsearch.php

The blog index page is a single-page list of titles (handy for Ctrl-F-ing), and has a hexagram and tag cloud at the top.

Thank you for this, My Key (mikey??).

Sage advice, certainly. Not pushing forward brashly can be difficult for me, and often the ego wants to bull its way through problems. Letting things rest and come as they will requires a level of trust that I'm certainly working on cultivating.

Living a life based on developing personal virtue has certainly been the focus of my life. Always more to do, it seems. That resonates well, in the sense that it is patience that is productive. Like hexagram 5, not waiting in a mere state of anticipation or anxiety, but doing what one can with what one has.

Appreciate your responses.

Take care,
Settan
