How do you cast your readings?

Resonance Journal

Does computerised casting work?

From time to time, someone will ask me whether it’s acceptable to cast the I Ching – that venerable, 3,000-year-old oracle – by tapping a button on a screen. And quite a bit more often, I’ll hear from someone how they received an answer that spoke to them with complete clarity and sparked extraordinary change in their life – by tapping a button on a screen.

I’ve also heard a couple of times how someone cast a reading online, only to doubt whether this could really be a valid answer, pick up the coins to ask again – and receive the same response.

So… yes, casting on a phone or computer, or whatever piece of modern technology you have to hand, is fine. (When people first started casting with coins, those were the recently-invented modern technology.) The Yi works; it’s been working every day for three millennia: you can’t break it now with the way you consult.

What if I just prefer coins?

And having said all that… you might just not like casting on a screen; you might prefer something slower and more tangible, or just want to change your awareness by breaking away from the omnipresent screen for a moment.

(That’s what I generally prefer. I know I can’t break the oracle: the Well wells, and it isn’t going anywhere. But the well-rope and jug of my own attention need more care.)

Your options in the Resonance Journal

So this is why the Resonance Journal leaves the choice of casting method with you. You can use a simple in-app casting, or cast your reading however you prefer and then enter it quickly and easily (whether or not you know the hexagram number). Here’s how that works:

You can cast a reading inside the Resonance Journal ? Where I can't see it ? Never knew there was a way to cast there.

When letting a computer/Iphone etc. do the randomizing proces the prognostication will count for this particular device and when You yourself do the randomizing proces with to example coins the prognostication will count for You. That's how I look at it. I've been working with randomizing programs many years ago and found that it demands quite a lot of a programmer to make such an algoritm to let it work like in reality ie. reality be the outcome of results from a horserace etc. etc.
But on the other hand the I Ching can reach us the most unbelieveable ways so: Why not skip this kind of logic too ? reaching us despite the fact that a machine casts the coins ??
But I'll stay conservative on that point anyway (I think  )

Thanks just found it. Didn't see the video there earlier. Never knew you could cast in there. I like to use the one click cast here don't like the ones where you cast one line at a time. Like Hilary said on the blog even though computer casts do work I'd always want to take important things to the coins for the sense of connection that I don't get with the computer. I didn't understand the drag and drop thing will have to watch it again.

This is weird, @Liselle that link you gave me is the only way to get to that video since the link in the blog in ED only takes one to the Resonance Journal sales page. It ought to take one to the video you linked to surely ?

Oh by 'regular blog' you mean the one in the actual blog section not the one in ED or the one here...well if there's a video in one best to have a video in them all. There's now 3 duplicates only one has a video.

Yes, the one on the actual Answers blog page has the video.

I think Hilary said it's not possible to do, to have the videos carry over to the forum.

Do you mean that link? ^^^ That one goes to the blog article.

This one goes to the sales page:

Oh interesting. Any particular reason? (At the risk of over-profunditizing things.)

I like the one at a time kind, when they're snappy at least, because I kind of get into a rhythm with clicking and repeating my question to myself. Like, "Ad-vice/click for this/click" - repeat 3 times.

You can post anything on youtube into the forum, maybe she means it doesn't automatically carry over.

The link on the one in ED is this https://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/journal-software/

I just find the one click one more real, clicking 6 times is purely for show whereas you just need one click. I always found it false to sit there and click 6 times I mean it's a computer you can get an instant answer don't have to pretend to make it look like real life. Hilary nearly did away with it here, called '2 pane cast' or something. However there was uproar and she was forced to resinstate it. It is a matter of preference of course.

There are two links, one at the top and one at the bottom. The top one goes to the blog page:
The bottom one goes to the sales page:

I see your point about the single click. If hazy memory serves I think I felt the same way until I started repeating my question to myself - it gave me something to do while clicking and didn't feel like a waste of time anymore.

(Which, actually, I'm not sure why I took to that. Casting the whole thing at once is more like me, really. Weird.)

Argh, did not mean to have two copies in the forum - thank you for pointing that out.

Yes, exactly that. I've just edited the post to add the video.

Hm... but if you cast with coins, then is the reading for you, or for the forces of gravity, inertia, friction etc that caused the coins to land in that formation? :devilish:

That's my view: you can't break it. But I do think there are good reasons for getting away from the screens to cast, all to do with human focus and attention (which are a lot more breakable).

Anyway... the point is that you can consult any way you like, and still get the benefit of storing readings digitally.

From my way of looking at it, the intention set at the start of the divination is the vital part of the process that determines who is the recipient of the message. So coins or computer can equally produce a set of outcomes not influenced by the conscious mind or the physical manipulations of the querent.

But I do think there are good reasons for getting away from the screens to cast, all to do with human focus and attention (which are a lot more breakable).
Me too! The history of I Ching divination from turtle shells through yarrow stalks and coins has placed high emphasis on human engagement with the manifesting of the signs and symbols. The divination rituals called for time spent in generation of the symbols to be much longer than the pressing of a computer key or keys. Maybe computer consultation works for some in the modern day but for me it is way too quick.

Focus and attention are crucial too. They are the sacrifice we make to the divination - especially in this busy world we live in today. They indicate our level of engagement and can be seen as a measure of us taking responsibility for being an integral part of the divination. Ultimately this links in with our level of ownership of the whole divination.
To my mind it's a question of "Am I involved with, or am I committed to, the divination? ". When we are eating our bacon and egg sandwich it's important to honour the involvement of the chicken and even moreso the commitment of the pig.
