I asked, shall I move with a truck, transporting furniture? #1
31u

or shall I give away my furniture and ship boxes by UPS? #2
61u

I have pretty much decided on option #2 but I am curious as to what the Yi may be advising.
Any thoughts?

Ok i think that by transporting the goods effective, then they will be safe, (31) By giving your stuff away at this point is the wrong thing to do (61)

I am just saying are you ready to give your stuff away, 61 is only you really know that.

I have done it but i thought about it.

Option 1 play it safe

Thanks Steve, and where are you Ashteroid?

Steve, thanks for giving this a shot.
I am considering your points. How does 31 indicate playing it safe? Just curious. I don't quite understand 31 in this context, though you may be right.
It is way cheaper to ship stuff in boxes. But, I would then need to buy new furniture, which could cost a lot So, it's a little bit tricky to figure out.
The hassle of dealing with trucks and movers (or still worse, moving and driving myself) is what is causing me to lean to the second idea, i.e. shipping boxes, giving away furniture -- (where I am, people don't buy a whole lot of used furniture -- usually, it is given away, if someone agrees to transport and pick it up).
Yes, Ashteroid is good with this kind of question, where are you Ashteroid?
Thanks, pal ! I know you've moved a few times yourself.
(PS-- how's your YELP like idea coming? )

Ashteroid retreated to the mountains and took a vow of silence after brexit casts fiasco :)

Ok ok I'll try to interpret this one.

Move by truck? 31
Richmond:
Influence. Attraction.
Continuance brings success.
Marrying a young girl is good fortune.

Keeping the furniture bodes well. Staying connected with it (31 was once mentioned as connection, a reading about building a bridge in Takashima's book.)

Wilhelm:
Thus the superior man encourages people to approach him by his readiness to receive them.

Welcome the movers with open heart?

Opposite of 31 is 41 'Two small bowls for the sacrifice' - would mean give it away I suppose.

Give away? 61
First thought was - keep the whole matter to yourself, don't involve others. Like don't count on their support to come and take it away.

Opposing is 62 where the advice is 'In his expenditures he gives preponderance to thrift' and 'Remaining lowly brings good fortune' - supporting the idea of parting with bulky stuff.

And then the 61 says, Legge:
(Moves even) pigs and fish, and leads to good fortune.
There will be advantage in crossing the great stream.
There will be advantage in being firm and correct.

Moves all things :) (with him) and crosses the great distance.

I think moving by truck is best. 31 even looks like something valuable (3,4,5) inside a truck, 1 and 2 lines being the wheels and frame, 6th - top.

If you have resonance (31) with the furniture, then move with the truck...

...otherwise, pack your treasures in boxes (61), and ship them.

Hex 31 - what is your attachment to the furniture - how would you feel without the particular pieces if you didn't have them

He 61 - go easy on yourself about the decision and a solution will be reached

Thank you, ALL.
Ashteroid, a special thanks for emerging from your ascetic solitude. That's a thought-provoking reading.
Liss, I sense you understand the hassles of moving, so I appreciate your gentle approach.
And radio free will , : an interesting solution.
There are several items which I can't bear to part with -- like my mirror and my lamp -- even though they are quite fragile and could get damaged (God forbid) along the way. I'd like to keep my bed and frame.
How about if I get those items shipped and give away the rest?
You see, it's hugely expensive to get professional movers to do the entire job. Maybe I can look into having them transport just a few items.
I don't know if Sixth Relative's method would shine any light...

I think this is very much down to what you want to do. It actually may not really matter much which way you choose. It's a simple choice which is up to you. I think it's down to how you feel which is reflected in both unchanging answers as others have said. 31 might indicate influence from others, either in your head, such as your internal voice of your upbringing or external, or external. 61 seems more the voice of your own heart. Both answers make me think this is a big 'inner reality' choice not an outer one which of course you already know.

Bear in mind many things we consult Yi about are purely down to our preference with no great far reaching consequences either way. Because we ask Yi about it we can think each and every choice carries an auspice, a weight, an important consequence but often answers indicate pretty much 'it's up to you'. I don't think there is a strong auspice either way here so this is a question of finding your preference.

Sporting Goods -- will they sell?

Yes, I see what you mean, Trojina -- and both answers do point back to my desires and
my inner truth.

Sometimes, even if the matter has little consequence, it is fun to see how the YI will reply, often incorporating images and specifics that are quite pertinent to the matter.

Example: I asked, "Will I manage to sell my PULL UP BAR and WEIGHT BENCH for the asking price?"
Sometimes sporting goods do sell but these have been posted for 24 hours online and only one person has replied, offering me $20 (instead of the $50 I'm asking for BOTH a bench and a pull up bar).

Since the changing lines result in 42 (Increase), my first hunch is that I will make the sale, -- an increase for me.

The first (bottommost) line, divided, shows its subject not perpetuating the matter about which the contention is. He will suffer the small injury of being spoken against, but the end will be fortunate.

* This shows me not accepting the $20 bid.

The second line, undivided, shows its subject unequal to the contention. If he retire and keep concealed where the inhabitants of his city are only three hundred families, he will fall into no mistake.

* I should withdraw to my own neighborhood and forget about the sale for a few days.

The fourth line, undivided, shows its subject unequal to the contention. He returns to the study of Heaven's ordinances, changes his wish to contend, and rests in being firm and correct. There will be good fortune.

*Here I cease trying to sell my sporting equipment. I consider donating it all to charity, having studied Heaven's Ordinances. Or I no longer worry about selling the goods. I study Heaven's ordinances, putting it all in God's hands. Then there is good fortune, because somebody needs the weight bench and pull up bar and is happy to buy both for such a good price.

What do you think?

Ashteroid: I like your interpretation of 61 EXCEPT even if I do not move my furniture, I will still be moving lots and lots of boxes, having them transported by truck (through UPS or a service like that).
And there are valuable things in the boxes.
What do you make of pigs and fishes? I believe there's a symbol in there.

my inner truth.

And with 61 your inner truth looms large, by which I mean your own world is massive to you on the inside but it isn't on the outside, the reverse of 62. So it can pay to remind oneself with 61uc I think that although something seems a big deal to you it doesn't mean it's a big deal....but it is if it is to you. I don't mean that to sound dismissive BTW, I moved last year and it was a big deal to me. One thing I did note is that when the removal guys carried my furniture out of my old place it looked like totally different furniture to the furniture I'd been living with. Out of context of the small flat it looked smaller and shabbier and I got rid of it eventually. When you take furniture with you it actually doesn't look like the same furniture in the new place.

Actually speaking only from experience, Yi aside, I think it's better to let old furniture go rather than take it with you unless it has great sentimental value.

My first impression of 6.1.2.4>42 is give up trying to sell it and let it go gladly. 42 is the nature of the time around the question. You are in a time of increase really don't hang around to haggle over the sale of these things let them go, give them to charity. 6.1 is telling you not to continue contending for the price you want, 6.2 to return to your own pressing business....do you have time for this ? 6.4 the peaceful putting to bed of the issue.

Again Yi aside I always give objects away rather than sell them. I find the cycle of profit (42) is greater this way. The more generously you give the more you receive. That sums up 42 for me. Just get rid of the stuff and it will benefit someone and you will find at some point you will find something you need very easily and cheaply.

I just took pigs and fishes as - everything can be moved. Pigs are dirty and heavy, and fishes even need a sealed water tank!

On the other hand, as Trojina said I also just give things away.
I've sold only my two cars, and a couple of car radios.
Electronics, computers, books, air humidifiers, kitchen utensils ... just gave for free to my friends/relatives if they needed it.

pigs/fishes, generosity

Trojina and Ashteroid,
I generally do give things away, myself.
However, I considered selling, this time -- for small prices, because I so recently bought a whole lot of stuff (within the last year). But , as you point out Trojina, the TIME it takes to negotiate and field inquiries -- for my weight bench and pull up bar -- can be quite counter-productive.
I like what you say about the time of increase -- it's a time of generosity.
Maybe something will come to me re: pigs/fishes. That's an interesting symbol.
Fishes: Generosity, supply (see hexagram 32) or opportunity? Pigs: where else do they appear in the iching?
I definitely want to transport my mirror and my NICE lamp. I wish I could keep my bed.
I'm letting it all unfold...
PS : how could I forget: PIGS, 38.6

I don't know if Sixth Relative's method would shine any light...

Hi loverofknowledge

I guess you're refering to Wen Wang Gua method (hardly mine ;) )

When I read your questions, I understood your doubt was about the best transportation choice (either truck or UPS); for that doubt the spirit of focus would be the relative Father, representing resources and transportation.

But as soon as I look to the hexagrams I noticed that in both 31 and 61, the relative Asset (representing material objects, goods, and money) is hiding and a central element of the reading. So, it seems like rather than the option between truck/UPS is the option keeping/selling your goods. Is that right? because - for interpretation with the Wen Wang Gua method- it makes a lot of difference to select as spirit of focus the relative father (means of trasnportation) or the relative asset (keeping/selling your goods).

For a credible reading, I would need to confirm whether you asked on July 10th (before 11 pm) or July 11th (including July 10th after 11 pm) or any other time.

That's a good question, Sixth Relative, and I'm not quite sure how to answer it. While I'm thinking, I asked another question for you.
July 12 : Shall I transport my bed or give it away?
(since my bed is the main large item I'm uncertain about -- the other furniture is not so valuable to me).

I received 55u

I'd said that in case of selling it, the money you get for it won't be of real benefit for you; but keeping it would be expensive. Nevertheless, there is a chance for surprising (unexpected) aid coming to you to help you in the reduction of the cost.

But I should arrange to give away the bed very soon, so I am still vexed (I would not try to sell it). Did you follow Wen Wang Gua?

Ok, here is my train of thought:

I always look first with the text-based method, then with the Wen Wang Gua method, and in a few cases I constrast the Yijing divination with Qi Men Dun Jia and Xiao Liu Ren divinations (just for clarity, I haven't use QMDJ nor XLR in any interpretation given in this forum)

In this case:
1) first [following the judgment, the great image, and the sequence], I notice that hex 55 is about a lot of worries due not to lack but excess of choices. One need to make a choice and discard the rest; one shouldn't regret or sorrow for that/those leaved behind but everytime, when 55 shows up, you need to decide your priorities, choose it and pay the cost: to close all other doors, to sacrifice the rest. This could be either the sacrifice of your bed if your priority is to reduce cost, or keeping your bed at the price of a more exprensive moving.

2) Then I took a look to the ruling yao: blessings coming. In some translations and comments, this line implies friends/advisers surrounding us.

3) Then I used the Wen Wang Gua method. The line representing you is Shen (metal) and the line with the relative Asset is Wu (fire). Tha's why I said that selling it won't be of benefit for you, but keeping it would be expesive. In July 12th, both the month and the day are Wei (earth), which clashes with Chou (earth) making it what Jack Chiu called a Passive Agresive (an non-active line which can produce effects on others as if it is active). In 55, there is a Chou line. Earth controls water and produces Metal, that's why I said that the cost could be reduced in your favor. The line Wu (representing the spirit of focus) has attached the Animal Teng She (the flying serpent), which implies something unexpected, a surprise.

Thanks , the Wen Wang Gua method yields interesting results, for questions like this of a practical kind. I am looking into services that ship beds by adding them to bigger deliveries, so that costs are lower. That's why it is interesting you said, I might get a good deal. If I do, I may ship the bed, but otherwise I'll just give it away. Where I am, the furniture and moving markets are quite crowded, so even donations take some planning, in order to get somebody to transport heavy pieces out of one's apartment.

Update: I am giving away all my furniture. However, the bed is still a sticking point. I wish I could take it but it would cost $754 to transport. Nobody accepts donations of beds--at least not the services that pick up. So I am waiting to see if Sixth Relative's reading prediction comes true: maybe I'll get a good deal at the last minute.

I once put the word out that I had a nice bed available to any newlyweds, for free, as long as they came and picked it up. Word went out through the friends network, and the bed was gone to a young couple the next Saturday. A year later, they sent me a picture of their new baby!

Update Sporting Equipment : 6.1.2.4 to 42

Update: interesting, that I've had inquires re: the weight bench, but they've fallen through, for one reason or another. One person just came by, but the bench was too short for him.
I am not attempting to sell much, but generally sporting goods are worth selling.
The Yi has proved correct, so far, about this sporting equipment question.
In fact, the person who just came by had to "withdraw to his own neighborhood," which is the same as my neighborhood (6.2) since the bench was the wrong size for him.
I am almost to 6.5 -- what will heaven's ordinances be?

And with 61 your inner truth looms large, by which I mean your own world is massive to you on the inside but it isn't on the outside, the reverse of 62. Thankyou I believe I am - it took a while to process but when I put it all together it was workplace bullying and domestic violence all rolled into one. As the teacher I had a duty of care to the children to report it to the authorities so I did - nothing more I can do except believe the right thing will be done for the children at least.

Despite what happened I've felt a real sense of inner peace since I got back despite the outer turmoil - my last thread seems to be a reflection of the change in me.

Good luck with your move and all that comes with it.

Hey there
I suppose what i meant intially was that if you do want to give your stuff away then do it, I gave everything away when i moved overseas , but really thought about it then I ripped the band-aid off as opposed to slowly pulling it.

I had a feeling you maybe were not ready to do that, so i may have read it wrong but like i said at the end of the day only you know whats best on that level.

Sometimes there is a freedom in giving things away, my dad is brutal when he gives things away, he once gave away the original beach boys record collection at a garage sale, i was gutted.

Yes good luck with the move, they are the worst, at least I suppose when I moved overseas I just took a bag not even a suitcase and that was prob the easiest move that i ever made,
i just didnt want to advise you to give your stuff away, but again if you want to do that, yea by all means.

All the best with the move,

Steve

Thanks, Steve -- just a bag? That's amazing.
Did you put stuff in storage in the US?
To reduce all your possessions to one bag is truly astonishing.
Did you miss the stuff? Did you have a plan before you went overseas?
Courageous!
