Dear Seekers and Seers, I'm a several years' lurker here at Online Clarity, an American in New York City. I love the I Ching for its contemplative and sensitive answers, and I first want to thank you for sharing with us, your readers.

I am shortly about to begin my first hunger strike. I am more frightened by my laziness and lack of discipline than the hunger itself. What scares me is I might fail to adhere to the rules of not eating, become weak, and stop before the strike's peaceful goals have been accomplished. The strike is to increase awareness of an oppressed group in America, and hopefully gain civil rights and more career opportunities for them. I was born as a member of, and belong to, this subculture.

I did not ask the I Ching a yes or no question, but instead asked it to present a meditation on the journey ahead.

Casting the coins, I received 16.3.5 > 31.

LiSe's awesome oracle calls 16 "Hesitating", and that pretty much sums up my fears. The strike begins a month from now, and I'm a slightly pudgy person who dislikes being kept from even one meal. As 16.3 says, I am definitely "staring hesitantly" and "resenting delays". I feel like a beginning diver looking over the edge of the board over the vast swimming pool below, and I'm scared waiting for the January start date will whittle away my resolve and make me chicken out. I'm anxious to just jump in and start the strike now -- but more experienced hunger strikers have warned me striking requires a four-week preparation where you phase out foods slowly until you are finally down to water, vitamins and salt. They tell me jumping in, unprepared, will make it more likely I break down and give up early -- to give it time. But part of me doesn't trust myself. I want to plunge in straightaway.

16.5 is interesting. LiSe's translation shows it as "Persistence. Chronically ill, but does not die." To me this is a great example of how accurate the Yi is. I want to believe it's counseling me that I will show the correct amount of persistence, and that I will get thin and weak, but the strike's goals will be accomplished in time, because luckily, I will "not die". But what I do not understand here is 31: "Being Affected"?

Who is being affected here: me (as I was, by the plight of the minority I am striking to try to assist), or the powers that be, who can give them better rights?

I guess what I am asking then is if someone wiser than I can look over my shoulder and see to it I am reading Hexagram 16 and its lines correctly, without inserting what I'm most scared of or desire the most into it to color it -- and if anyone can identify which party is "affected" at the end. PS, the minority is a racial one: a group of women of one race, who often seem to get the short end of the stick in America, especially in career.

Thank you for any pointers and illumination. I have been enjoying this forum for more than four years now. :)

My meditation on this would be that you've got the wrong end of the stick in planning a future hunger strike. Hexagram 16.3 indicates enthusiasm for the idea that it's not so important to stage something in the future as it is to give voice to your ideas now; that now is the proper time and that there is a more positive way {Hexagram 31} to gain "affection" or "admiration" for your ideals.

Hexagram 16.5 would say to me that there's no point in taking a position when no one is watching you, when it will come off as a fruitless effort. This also seems tied to 16.3 and related to the waiting and not really having a showcase, a forum, regardless.

The thought that comes to mind is that you are obviously as well-spoken and educated, articulate and interesting person. Why are you contemplating something that is the last resort when you could be turning your skills to something positive, ongoing, and vital that attracts participation from others? Is this on a dare or something? Because it doesn't sound like it's the right approach.

Hexagram 16 is about Enthusiasm, not desperation. And the lines you've drawn would seem to say that you have, or could have, a forum in a very constructive way. That doesn't sound like a hunger strike, which is pretty much a pity party and won't hold anyone's attention. So find your true forum would seem be to a part of the message Where is it? What is it? Use your formidable abilities in presenting your cause and rally others who can also contribute. For some reason it comes to my mind that there would be celebrity people who might support a well thought out presentation?

Arabella, thank you for taking a look at the Hexagram and its lines for me. It's an honor being spoken to by you; I've read so many great posts by you, and it's a bit like meeting a celebrity itself!

Your meditation resonates. I have misgivings about performing a hunger strike, and a wise friend of mine advised me against it, telling me not to panic, that time is not running out for me and there is no rush. I think he sensed, as you also have, that I do feel some anger and desperation as I have spent the last few years hiding from society because the situation the hunger strike addresses wounded me and caused what seemed (and still seems) like irreparable harm. There is a feeling of "last resort", "back to the wall", like I must risk my life to make a bold statement forcing the bad guys in this situation to treat me, and those who look like me, with justice and humanity. Too, I am no spring chicken any more. I lost 20 years of my youth pretending my talents, skills and personality would sail right over prejudice. And I have nothing to show for it, while those who look more acceptable to society, who are not as well-trained, have sailed right over me. My wise friend warned me a hunger strike might cause me to fail again.

But I felt there was no choice.

Your meditation resonates with the butterflies I feel in my stomach about striking, and a general ill feeling I have that it might be ignored and fail miserably. I have to spend more time thinking about this decision, is what it sounds like to me.

Thank you Arabella for a good reading. I must be completely off base, and I need to seek clarity before acting further.:bag:

Thanks for your confidence Brambletoad, and I hope you find the best way to get your life on track. Maybe instead of assuming you should be starving to make your point ask the Yi something like, "What is the best way to improve my situation?" And for the word "situation" you could substitute anything more specific like "career" or "lifestyle" or "confidence" -- just put whatever best describes the area you are trying to take control of. My own experience says that you are always better off to aim for control where you HAVE control -- not try to manipulate the reactions of other people. Work on yourself first and foremost. Have you ever noticed -- there are people in the world who aren't at all attractive in the normal sense, uneducated in the traditional way, who come from lousy backgrounds with impossible childhoods, are missing nearly everything that you'd think of as a route to easy success. And yet these same people are vibrant, well known, respected, even adored! How did they do it? I think that one answer is that no matter who else didn't find them attractive, respect, or love them -- they built their confidence and got out there and demanded the attention they wanted. They had ultimate confidence and their confidence made them beautiful, intelligent and special. You are all of those things and more no doubt, but just discouraged at the moment. Don't let anyone or anything do that to you. I strongly suggest you pose a better question and get out there and claim your place in the world. I realise the competition is pretty stiff in New York but if you're intelligent enough to write what you wrote, you're up to the game! BTW there's really no such thing as celebrity in Clarity, we are all friends who help each other however we can. I am as lucky as you are to have good pals on here I can really count upon. XO Arabella

Arabella, thank you, this advice is particularly well-timed and most, most kind. I hoped to push the famous "thank you" button, but er... I seem a bit foolish and unable to find it

Aw, very flattering, don't feel foolish! I hope any of this helps and there are so many people on here who are glad to offer their experience. Just keep on casting for more direction, have a good look at the Yi Ching's various interpretations [Wilhelm, Hilary, LiSe,Hatcher] and also at the archives on here of past sample castings, for assistance in putting your answers into some perspective. Obviously it's got a resonance for you and will mean more and more to you too over time. Arabella

you have to have made 11 posts I think for the 'thanks' button to appear. No one knows why this is. So far you have made 3 posts. 7 more and you will be admitted to the Thanks button

I was curious as to which minority group you were going to hunger strike for ?

Presumably you'd rather not say ?

I have a better idea. Cast the Yi and see how it describes the minority, and see if you can deduce it from the Hexagram and/or Lines. I would be very intrigued to see what it says!

I only ask about things that have personal significance for me. This doesn't. There is no need to do a cast about which 'minority' group you belong to when you can tell us.

Besides this is a peculiar idea you are buying into that I don't buy at at all. This idea that Yi can describe an entire 'minority group' as if that group were not all unique individuals

I've no idea why its such a big secret afterall you've told us all about him and his plays and your photo in the New York Times.http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=14014 Theres probably many visitors to the forum of your 'minority' group who could help more as they would have an inside view of what minority you say you belong to.
