BTW Luis,

The comments on inside/outside reflect qualities included in the perspectives of hexagrams 22 and 47, where 22 puts all focus on the outside of the boundary (often interpreted as a face etc) whereas 47 puts the focus on the inside of the boundary (with the 'traditional' complaint about the enclosure causing 'stress')

In the context of males/females, so the inside for the male would be their anima, and the inside for the female would be their animus.

The nature of the core trigrams influencing these hexagrams are in the focus on containment/control issues for water, vs a focus on guidance/direction-setting (aka an ideology) in fire.

If we then map-in the associations to emotions then the issues are of rejection for water, acceptance for fire.

Mountain in the top position of any hexagram reflects a focus on discernment, quality control, and so 22 will reflect this aspect in its nature.

Lake in the top position of any hexagram reflects a focus on sharing space with others 'externally' and intensly, in 47 it is like being in a zoo or being a 'hollywood personality' etc - IOW the enclosure is not necessarily 'exhausting', it is the price you pay to integrate with the context; to 'bond' (or in its negative form, the FORCING of one to integrate with the context - and so the INTENSE reflection of lake, as well as the depth in self-reflection)

Thus, as 22 reflects beautifying to be attractive to a mate etc, so it also reflects forcing the focus from the inside to the outside, and so acts to distract. Overall, all action is on the outside. In 47 all action is on the inside. Since these two hexagrams pair as opposites, so they reflect a WHOLE, 22 outside, 47 inside.

Using the line position material, so we can XOR 22 with all other hexagrams to see how each of those hexagrams 'appear' or 'beautify' themselves - as we can XOR 47 with each of them to see the reflection of their internal nature.

Another point re mountain as discernment.

In its pure form, mountain is reflected in the hexagram of 52. This hexagram shares space, is paired with, 15. 15 reflects the UNCONDITIONAL levelling, evening-out, of highs and lows to present 'modesty'. 52 is CONDITIONAL in this act and so the focus on discernment, one selects what to diminish, what to exaggerate to a achieve an OVERALL sense of 'balance' and 'harmony', modesty - the dark balances out the light, the light the dark.

Mountain in its is raw form, base trigram form, relates to blockage, stopping etc and when we link-in emotions we have the emotion of sadness/grief (and so of suffering - linking it to buddhism if we use the IC to focus on the characteristics in the spiritual focus of religions. )

The emphasis with the emotional angle is sharing space with another/others who where once loved, now gone/deceased. Generically it is any blockage, stopping etc (there is also an element of it being a gateway to 'something else')

The doubling of mountain turns these reactive, negative, states into proactive, positive states - reflected in the acts of discernment - block this, let-in that, highlight this, gloss over that etc etc. - we use our past experiences of relationships with others to determine our discernment

Hex 23 does this in the context of devotion, mountain over heaven is 'housekeeping' in its 'under-exaggerated' form - the high priest/priestess seperating chaff from the wheat, the considered one 'true' faith being the exaggerated form of expression.

I am, as always, amazed that all that comes out of a single brain.

Hi Candid
The question about explaining these confounded formulas to a young teenager is an very insightful question. I am going to comment about that on the other thread I started called 'confounded formulas'. Thanks for that question. I have always felt that all you really need is the right question, then the right answer will just fall in your lap like ripe fruit from the vine.
