Hi there...

I've moved to a new area, and I'm looking for a new vet. I did some research and narrowed my choice down to two and then consulted the I Ching.

Vet A - the I ching answered 39.4 to 31
Vet B - the I ching answered 43

Which one do you think the Yi is recommending and why?

I'm thinking that 39 addresses the loss of your old community and the necessity for making new connections, and that you will be successful in re-establishing a place for yourself where you feel safe and appreciated.

I think line 4 is telling you to be authentic, be yourself. Even if you feel out of step with your new surroundings initially, people will be attracted to you and you will make new friends.

31 seems to me to be warning you about Vet A - he/she may look good, is well-intentioned but self-serving in a way that is not immediately apparrent. She/he may surprise you unpleasantly.

I'm thinking that with Vet B, you may have to be assertive in order for your observations or wishes to be noted. You may also need to work at discerning how far to trust his/her judgement, and at not letting that process get in the way of your relationship.

How many points do I get for my answer? :p

"Vet A - the I ching answered 39.4 to 31
Vet B - the I ching answered 43

Which one do you think the Yi is recommending and why?"

Hex 39.4 says it is better to hold back on this vet because it would prove to be a mistake, so not a good idea.

Hex 31 basically it means joy in keeping still, showing restraint.

Hex 43 suggests that you take decisive action and go see vet B and talk to him. It also says that vet B will dispense his blessing downward, ie give his attention to the animals/birds in his care and will be receptive to their needs giving you joy.

Well, it seems to me that vet B is the person to take your animals to.

Thank you for your help.

It's interesting that I should have known about 31 a long time ago what is said here. I used to want to believe it meant literally courtship, like the kind that leads to marriage, but over time have observed it usually means nothing of the sort and have learned, instead, to step back from anything that draws the 31 hexagram.

I have seen some interesting interpretations of 43 on this forum that conflict with my own understanding, but I see it as decisive resolute action as well.

Do you mean this idea about 31 parisopen ? This is a new understanding to me, haven't come across this 'self serving' element before. Interesting you found 31 quite different to the usual 'attraction' stuff. I'd be interested to hear why you step back from things that draw 31, I'm intrigued. If you feel inclined can you say why - is it for Rindas reasoning above ?

My thought about the possible self-serving element came from LiSe's Yi:

seeing Vet A as the person who offered Snow White's apple.

Interesting. Well I might have made some errors there then cos i thought 31 counselled openness to influence, to allow influence. Didn't think it involved this careful discrimination element, which to me seems more to belong to 27. Hmm well food for thought. Thanks.

Hi Trojan

I enjoy Rhinda's metaphor that it's the stepmother offering Snow White the apple for the experiences I've had with 31. In those experiences the persons and situations that draw 31 usually involve "sales" and often sales of a "bill of goods." I don't believe 31 is about courtship and marriage at all any more. Over time, it's proven to be much more about manipulation and seduction.

What I didn't mention about Vet A is the only reason I considered him is because he's right around the corner, within walking distance. I've also heard from two people that he recommends (sells) unnecessary tests and procedures. I just didn't know if they were "whining" or not until the I Ching echoed their sentiments.

Vet B is several miles away, but then his reputation for caring and honesty is so far reaching that people travel for miles to take their pets to him. Rhinda's and Willowfox's readings reflect my own basic understanding and add additional insight for which I am grateful.

Thanks for that Paris, it really is a new idea for me, am chewing it over. Difficulty must lie in knowing when 31 is about manipulation and when its about attraction ? I suppose one looks to the moving lines for that ? Sounds like you've discarded the attraction element.
