Sun is one of the eight doubled trigrams. It is the eldest daughter and symbolises wind or wood; it has for it's attribute gentleness, which nonetheless penetrates like the wind or like growing wood with it's roots. Wilhelm

One of my favourite sounds is the sound of the trees in the wind....(right now it is shrieking loud here and penetrating the keyhole !)and it seems to follow 57 is one of my favourite hexagrams...if one can have a favourite. In all my examples of 57uc from my journal I notice they all show ease of access, blending in seamlessly, naturally becoming part of.

I love that idea of 'spreading out what you are'.

Hilary writes of this pair in her book

Subtly Penetrating forms a pair with hexagram 58, Opening:

'Opening:seeing. Subtly Penetrating: hidden away.'

Some things are in plain view; some are hidden away. Among people there is explicit communication, and there is the subtle interpenetration of lives in countless small ways.

In 58 the exchange is between surfaces, it's out in the open. In 57 the exchange takes place at a subliminal level, underground, hidden like roots or carried in a mysterious unseen way like the winds can penetrate even the smallest spaces without being seen.


All the examples I have in my journal are mundane, yet I think what they have in common is this ease of blending with, blending into...ease of access. Conversely one might see the rooting in 57 as infiltration, allowance, absorption.

My mundane...well very mundane examples ;

1. I asked if I would be able to park if I tried to attend a workshop. If I couldn't park, for reasons I won't go into, I wouldn't be able to go. So I asked Yi if I'd be able to park and got 57uc. I recall that journey as like a knife going through soft butter. No hold ups, not even any red lights or traffic jams...and right outside the venue ample parking spaces. Now I rarely would ask Yi about parking but in this case it mattered. This reading really stayed with me because it gave me another angle on 57, I saw it, or rather felt it, in a way I hadn't hitherto. I experienced my journey and my parking...and hence my attendance at the workshop, viscerally, as an infiltrating wind whistling through a keyhole....nothing in my way I couldn't get through.



2. I asked about joining a dance therapy group. I had 57uc and went along. It was similar in sensation to the above. There was no friction, no resistance, it was easy just to join in and be accepted as part of the scenery. Also they played some music that had always had a special effect on me in childhood so that also blended my experience of 'then and now' in a seamless way. No sense of strangerhood, easy blending and easy access to the work going on there. .

It only just occurs to me that 56, that sense of being a stranger was last in the sequence. Hah I don't generally set much store by the sequence but from Hilary's book

'The Traveller has no place where he is accepted, and so Subtly Penetrating follows. Subtly Penetrating means entering in.'

....well I'd never noticed that connection before.



3. I'd seen some black biker boots I wanted but as I had to be very careful with money, I asked Yi about them. The shop was a bit dubious so I had my doubts. Yi gave me 57uc. Hmm well I caught myself thinking the other day as I reached for them again (yes I bought them) how they had become almost an extension of me. Everything is so right about them I almost don't notice I have them on....Everyone probably has known some item of clothing like this, that just works so well it's almost part of them. Something very comfortable that blends with your body.


Well I did say these were mundane examples



4. I asked about continuing in some voluntary work I'm doing. A few things were making me re think what I was doing there. Well I'm still there....since the thing is I just fit in there, almost like part of the furniture. There have been comings and goings of several managers but I have the sense my roots have infiltrated without me consciously doing anything. I had the chance to talk to Hilary about this reading via CC and she said it was like 'it becomes part of you and you become part of it....which is fine if you know where you're going/it's going'...something like that. So there might be the idea one could just go very easily go along with this without necessarily knowing where it leads. This is ongoing so I don't know how it will turn out overall but for now I'm still rooting.


All those examples have something in common at least to my mind. Gentle Penetration....(the hexagram title that has caused most mirth amongst young novice Yingers)

I also have other castings of 57uc with similar experiences of being able to 'enter in', to root, and so on.


Have you any more serious or darker experiences with 57uc ?



Finally I turn to Wing's thoughts on 57uc

The trigram, SUN, small gentle effects, is doubled in PENETRATING INFLUENCE. The upper and lower realms mutually influence one another. Without changing lines, the implication is that you must allow the object of your inquiry to influence you. Through a willing submission to the time and the situation, you will gain insight and perspective. You can then determine what is possible and harmonious within the current circumstances of your life.

The 57uc reading of mine I can most easily find is the one I posted in the "Gifts of Journalling" thread here on Clarity, having to do with Resonance Journal.

I really like that reading. I'm hoping that one thing it means is that Resonance Journal will help me just to understand (penetrate, work out) my readings better. If so, I will be found doing this :



I like it even more after reading what Trojina said above about 57uc. Maybe Resonance Journal will feel like an natural extension of me and my thought process, or help me to develop a better thought process about my readings.

The templates and suggestions Hilary is making in the Enliven course about dreams and readings will surely be part of that. A lot of the concepts in the course are so new to me that I'm just sort of taking it all in right now - I've never paid any attention to my dreams except maybe as fleeting bits of entertainment - but I've been trying to keep the template ideas in mind when thinking about dreams and readings.

Thank you for posting your examples, Trojina. On the surface, the I Ching often doesn't seem to relate terribly well to common everyday things, and it's helpful to see examples of how yes, it really does.

Yes. Though no specific reading comes immediately to mind, 57 is like the wind in the desert: it can be gentle and cooling or it can be relentless and fatiguing. Both are penetrating but each feels very different. If I am probing too hard, it is like the latter: a troubling, restless feeling. But if I heed the reading, it's like "whoa, horsie." It's like stepping out of the wind, a relief.

Your motorcycle boots (never would have guessed ) sounds more like LiSe's Seal idea: this is who I am, an identification with. I feel that sometimes with 57.

I find 57 one of the most open to interpretation hexagrams - whereas some are quite explicit this one always baffles me. I got it re a relationship question and (depending on whose interp I read) it seemed to tell me to persist in the situation, like the gentle wind, or to start afresh and move on. Yes, true. I mean one isn't in much doubt with 52uc for example ...but with 57uc, at least from what I've read and heard from others experiences, it's not always one that brings an 'aha' moment for them. I wonder if it's one that needs to penetrate us gently so gently there is no sudden 'aha'....the answer becomes part of us as time passes ?

I think so yes. Also, the way I phrased the question was a "should I continue persevering?" as I got 52.5 > 53 a while back....so I was basically asking if I should carry on this time. It's as if the iching is telling me off, saying "YOU make up YOUR mind about this. I've already told you! But ps, yes continue and be gentle about it"

57 has always been an "of course" for me, especially in questions concerning requests. One time I met with a program director to ask for an extension at a funded residency, and 57 was a clear and graceful "Yes, of course..." I also get it, sometimes with changing lines, for questions about correspondence and long-distance collaborations. "Thus the superior man / Spreads his commands abroad / And carries out his undertakings." Often there's an underlying element of subtle persuasion, of "gentle penetrating".

If I let myself 'sit' in the energy of 57uc I feel as though I'm sitting, smiling and cross-legged, with eyes close, on warm sands with a warm breeze flowing over me and into me, and that I am part of the energy of space (sorry for sounding far out). When I look through my journal (I've received it twice today, so I was keen to 'penetrate' its inner mystery) I see I've had it for situations or questions concerning interaction and communication but at the same time no direct communication was necessary because there seemed to be good vibes in flow. As if to say, just allow the positive energy to flow reciprocally around this situation and it will evolve in its own time.

I woke up sick today, asked whether I should postpone a job I had scheduled for tomorrow, received 57UC. After reading this thread it occurred to me that I should ask one of the other people involved how he felt about a delay. Immediately he responded that he could really use a day off and would rather do the job in a week. So glad I involved him in the decision because otherwise I likely would have forced myself to go to work tomorrow so I didn't disappoint anyone. The third person in the equation seemed fine with the delay as well.

Yesterday I posted here about a 57UC experience which resulted in a welcome postponement of an upcoming job. Today I was reading more about 57UC and came across two different references to 57UC being a hexagram of healing;

I think all hexagrams can potentially refer to healing just as all hexagrams can refer to feelings or work or....it depends what you are asking about. Healing comes in many forms. You may need surgery, 23 perhaps or 21. Or perhaps one needs to rest, 24, or perhaps one needs a way of exit from burdens, 28. So no I don't think 57 is specifically a hexagram of healing which is not to say it can never refer to a healing process with regard to your specific question.

Remember, rather than take as gospel what people say about what hexagrams mean always go back to the actual text of Yi. As far as I know 'healing', I mean the actual word, isn't in 57, it might be but I don't know of it anyway. But people might find 57 has signified a process of healing for them, in their situation, perhaps by being permeated by healing influences, I don't know.

In the case of your answer here I far prefer your original take on your answer here

So you didn't just make a stark final decision you penetrated softly into the situation, burrowed into it one might say. In fact you harmonised smoothly through gentle penetration of the situation. You softly penetrated by reaching out further into the situation. Reaching out, sensing out what was just beyond you you found it was okay as he wanted a day off too. Now that's a nice smooth easy adaptation, you to him and him to you. You easily accommodate one another, you can fit, meld, blend. Good All those words, accommodating, blending, smooth sound like gentle healing words. That doesn't mean 57 means 'healing' but naturally like all hexagrams it may have it's own healing aspect, if you ask about healing, which you didn't exactly. But the situation did work out well

So if you think about it as I said all hexagrams would have a healing aspect if you were asking about your health. 60 might suggest you look to regulating your physical habits perhaps, 2 might suggest you allow things to take their course, 3 might suggest you seek out a skilled helper and so on. 58 might signify you could help your health through sharing and talking on a forum or in a group. So in my opinion there is not just one hexagram that signifies healing. Does that make sense ?

P.S. Glad you mentioned 2 in your answer. Just received 2 UC for my daily reading and I have been dealing with a perplexing health issue that has been lingering.

I’ve got another example. I had an all day assessment interview that I’d been preparing for weeks. I’d booked an early coach as the assessment was in London (I prefer coach to train) but the night before couldn’t sleep a wink. Not a wink. I was working myself up into quite a state and wondering what on earth i should do. Try and reschedule? How could I possibly perform on no sleep? Anyway, I asked yi if the interview would be a complete train wreck if I went. 57 uc. Hmm. Clearly I thought: ‘you’ll breeze through it.’

So, after listening to several relaxation meditations which failed to tip me into sleep, i got up and went. The coach journey was 3 hours and i slept pretty solidly the whole way.

And guess what? The day was a breeze. How I functioned I don’t know, adrenaline perhaps, but it was fine. I even enjoyed it. I won’t know for weeks whether I was successful but either way I feel I gave it my best shot. I don’t think a full night’s sleep would have made me perform any better. So there we go!

I am waiting to start a job. I passed an exam to get it last year and i am now in the list of people they have to call but they did not call me yet. It´s been a tough time for me, waiting and waiting and waiting... (patience is not my thing, btw). Because I was desperate, I asked Yi, "what´s going on with this? Will I have to wait for another whole year? I will die!" And Yi gave me 57. By reading your post I interpret the hexagram here as: "No, it won´t be that long, the access to what you want will be easier". Am I right?

PS. I must say first hex I obtained with first question: "what´s going on with this?" was 53 uc, that´s why in desperation I asked: Oh, no!! Will I have to wait for another whole year? I will die!", and then the book said 57uc. which I translated as "It won´t be that long".

The problem is what happened in one person's experiences isn't always directly translatable to another's. The answers you had so far do seem favourable to me and perhaps there's quite a lot of investigation to do on their part. In 57 all sources are traced back, investigated. Might even be taking a while due to following up references.

But these threads are for experiences in hindsight and I wonder whether you will get more ideas and input on your query if your post were in SR? It's up to you, just a thought.

Thanks, I think I took your translation by following my intuition as well. Normally, when something is definitely "not working", I never got 57 as an answer. My experiences with 57 is that something I can´t see and sometimes I even don´t know is taking place and making things easy for me in the shadow. I always see a hope in 57. Last time I got it was about my exboyfriend right when he left me I asked if it was all over and I got 57. Six months later he got in touch with me again so my influence on him wasn´t over at all.

That is why in this case I think 53 is not that bad along with 57 and the time I´ll have to wait won´t be too hard for me.
