Hexagram 16. Yu / Enthusiasm

The strong line in the fourth place, that of the leading official,
meets with responce and obedience from all the other lines, which are all weak.

The attribute of the upper trigram, Chien,is movement;
the attributes of K'un, the lower, are obedience and devotion.

This begins a movement that meets with devotion and therefore inspires enthusiasm. carrying all with it. Of great importance, furthermore, is the law of movement along the line of least resistance, which in this hexagram is enunciated as the law for natural events and for human life.

Generic emotional form: with/from fear comes surprise. (from darkness comes surprise, sudden 'light')

Trigrams - with/from devotion to another/others comes awareness (of what is to come? - thunder in bottom is enlightenment, new, sudden etc thunder in top is enlightenment doubled - the sense of awareness beyond the moment)

16 Enthusiasm
Foresight, Preparing
In a context of devotion we utilise awareness.

"YU : ready, prepared for, prearrange, take precaution, think beforehand; satisfied, contented, at ease. The ideogram: son and elephant, careful, reverent, and very strong."ERANOS p232

Some pair info:

In the binary sequence hexagram 16 pairs with hexagram 35.
In this pairing there is an overall sense of 'things to come', with the focus in 35 on making progress through differentiation by bringing 'something' into the light, and the focus on integration in 16 through the unconditional use of foresight and planning.

In the binary sequence hexagram 16 opposes hexagram 09.
The opportunism of 09, where we accumulate small gains upon which to stand and go 'higher' is opposed by the use of foresight and enthusiastic planning to achieve one's ends (16).
At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with the EARTH trigram as base. In this sequence hexagram 20, the focus upon being an example, admiration, is 'opposed' by hexagram 16, the use of one's own foresight/planning. More so, the exaggerated sense of open enthusiasm, foresight, and planning is reflected in a more balanced format through being an example for others, a source of admiration and so motivation for others.

In the traditional sequence hexagram 16 pairs with hexagram 15.

REDUCE EXAGGERATIONS:

15 : reduce exaggerations - through re-distribution, even-out; 15 modesty comes out of a context [an infrastructure, 27-ness] described by hexagram 22 - facading, gloss over, cover up

16 : reduce exaggerations - through planning, think beforehand; 16 foresight, planning comes out of a context [an infrastructure, 27-ness] described by hexagram 21 - problem solving, to chew over

Full spectrum is summarised at the line positions section in:

THE JUDGEMENT

ENTHUSIASM. It furthers one to install helpers
And to set armies marching.

The time of ENTHUSIASM derives from the fact that there is at hand an eminent man who is in sympathy with the spirit of the people and acts in accord with it. Hence he finds universal and willing obedience. To arouse enthusiasm it is necessary for a man to adjust himself and his ordinances to the character of those whom he has to lead. The inviolability of natural laws rest on this principle of movement along the line of least resistance. These laws are not forces external to things but represent the harmony of movement immanent in them. That is why the celestial bodies do not deviate from their orbits and why all events in nature occur with fixed regularity. It is the same with human society: only such laws as are rooted in poular sentiment can be enforced, while laws violating this sentiment merely arouse resentment.
Again, it is enthusiasm that enables us to install helpers for the completion of an undertaking without fear of secret opposition. It is enthusiasm too that can unify mass movements, as in war, so that they achieve victory.

THE IMAGE

Thunder comes resounding out of the earth.
The image of ENTHUSIASM.
Thus the ancient kings made music
In order to honor merit,
And offered it with splendor
To the Supreme Deity,
Inviting their ancestors to be present.

When, at the beginning of summer, thunder - electrical energy - comes rushing forth from the earth again, and the first thunderstorm refreshes nature, a prolonged state of tension is resolved. Joy and relief make themselves felt. So too, music has the power to ease tension within the heart and to loosen the grip of obscure emotions. The enthusiasm of the heart expresses itself involuntarily in a burst of song, in dance and rhythmic movement of the body. From immemorial times the inspiring effect of the invisible sound that moves all hearts, and draws them together, has mystified mankind.
Rulers have made use of this natural taste for music; they elevated and regulated it. Music was looked upon as something serious and holy, designed to purify the feelings of men. It fell to music to glorify the virtues of heroes and thus to construct a bridge to the world of the unseen. In the temple men drew near to God with music and pantomimes (out of this later the theater developed). Religious feeling for the Creator of the world was united with the most sacred of human feelings, that of reverence for the ancestors. The ancestors were invited to these divine services as guests of the Ruler of Heaven and as representatives of humanity in the higher regions. This uniting of the human past and the Divinity in solemn moments of religious inspiration established the bond between God and man. The ruler who revered the Divinity in revering his ancestors became thereby the Son of Heaven, in whom the heavenly and the earthly world met in mystical contact.
These ideas are the final summation of Chinese culture.
Confucius has said of the great sacrifice at which these rites were performed: "HE WHO COULD WHOLLY COMPREHEND THIS SACRIFICE COULD RULE THE WORLD AS THOUGH IT WERE SPINNING ON HIS HAND."

Six in the beginning means:
Enthusiasm that expresses itself
Brings misfortune.

A man in an inferior position has aristocratic connections about which he boasts enthusiastically. This arrogance inevitably invites misfortune. Enthusiasm should never be an egotistic emotion; it is justified when it is a general feeling that unites one with others.

The six at the beginning expresses its enthusiasm; this leads to the misfortune of having the will obstructed.

This line is analogous to the six at the top of the preceding hexagram. Consequently the idea of self expression appears here for the same reason as it does there, namely, because of the relationship of correspondence to the strong ruler of the hexagram. The line at the beinning is weak [yin line in the yang position], incorrect, isolated, and instead of being cautious, expresses its enthusiasm. This is certain to lead to misfortune.

I think Wilhelm's explanation of why the yin line at the beginning leads to misfortune is worth a closer look:
"The six at the beginning expresses its enthusiasm; this leads to the misfortune of having the will obstructed."
Thus, expressing one's enthusiasm, one's life force, energy, too soon "obstructs" one's will power? Like energy has to build, travel up the chakra's until it reaches the crown chakra for the "Aha moment"? Is this what you are refering to, dobro, when you say you see "preparation" in 16?

Wilhelm says this line warns against boasting against aristocratic connections. Perhaps we could remember it as the "If you're so smart, why ain't ya rich?" line.

I also like this tip, "Enthusiasm should never be an egotistic emotion; it is justified only when it's a general feeling that unites one with others." Good to consider when one feels like sharing. Will others really be uplifted hearing about my latest triumphs, or am I just showing off?

Line 1
"A person in an inferior position is boastful about their upbringing and family status. Not wise."

with/from foreseeing/enthusing comes enlightenment/awareness/sudden - the position is in the sense of the 'new', the 'child' etc and the boastfulness is on an 'enlightened' perspective that must be rooted in family since the 'new' prohibits any sort of experience to support the boastfulness (aka enthusiasm about oneself - self promoting)

The boastfulness reflects foreseeing in the utilisation of family influence to try and seed the future, to jump ahead etc. through contacts.

16 reads "with/from devotion to another/others comes awareness"
51 reads "with/from enlightenment comes awareness"

In class socities the 'enlightened' form a class (e.g. Brahmans of India) such that being born into such a class one is considered 'enlightened' by the class and this can seed how one interacts with the 'others' - in other words a degree of arrogance etc due to some claim of birthright.

My astro correspondence for hexagram 16 is a Mars-Neptune aspect.
Napoleon Bonaparte had such an aspect (conjunction) and a certain C.Lofting has it too (opposition) ...

Okay, let's not jump to conclusions. :D

Astro correspondence? Sounds worth knowing about! Mars has to do with energy and war, Neptune rules music so that would fit.

Six in the second place means:
Firm as a rock. Not a whole day.
Perseverance brings good fortune.

This discribes a person who does not allow himself to be misled by any illusions.

I think of the second line as being the X-marks-the-spot spot. Line one puts out the signal to the mother ship and line two says, "We read you, you're on planet earth. (Help will arrive shortly)" or, if not so friendly, "Activity detected on the grid. (We eat tonight!)" Here at line 16.2 just this eensy beensy peep from line 16.1, an unseemly sign of enthusiasm, has alerted the universe as to who 16.1 is and where he is. (I can hear the squadren leader hissing, "Drat have we learned nothing? The very first rule people, 1.1, Keep Quiet!") Now, because this is hexagram 16, Enthusiasm, the advice is do something quick!

There are several old threads about this, Rosada.
Here is one of them (the link that Matt gives in the first post doesn't work anymore).

 eh ? I read that a few times and can't relate it to 16,2. You think Rosada it means do something quick because you've been spotted and theres danger ?

I've never been sure about this line, I'll be interested to hear how others interpret it - the sci-fi angle has lost me

Hi Trojan,
Well I must admit some of what I write gets lost on me too.
I think rather than "do" something quick, it's probably more like "decide" something quickly.
I'm having a hard time writing/thinking as there's a lot of noise in this room. Hopefully I'll be able to write later.

Okay, here's a 16.2 The phone just rang. It was a "wrong number" and the caller hung up as soon as he heard my voice. He didn't say hello, ask my name or 'wait a whole day" to "persever" in his phoning.

Okay, I will try. It is also a good opportunity for me to work out the details. I never did that.

Below is what I have for the trigrams of hexagram 16 - earth and thunder - so far.
If you combine the keywords for the corresponding planets Neptune and Mars (the possibilities are practically endless) you will find some things that seem to fit more or less and others that don't fit at all.
The correspondence between planets and trigrams is not supposed to be exact, it is only a similarity.

Hexagram 24 has the same trigrams. So what is the difference? Answer: I'm not sure yet. :) Hope to figure that out soon and if I have or think I have I will post my ideas. But perhaps others have ideas too?

Okay, here goes ...

* Earth trigram

Planet: Neptune
Category: spirit
Jungean function: intuition
Gender: female
Platonic idea: the real

Keywords for Neptune:
imaginative, archetypal, confused, foggy, drugged, loving, empathic, mystical, vague, oceanic, dreamy, absent minded, devotional, sleepy, lazy, without boundaries, unstructured, unrealistic, unpractical, idealistic, angelic, subtle, open, anonymous, incoherent, chaotic, elusive, deceptive, intuitive, psychic, sensitive, ....

* Thunder trigram

Planet: Mars
Category: body
Jungean function: sensation
Gender: male
Platonic idea: the beautiful

Keywords for Mars:
Energetic, vital, active, dynamic, enthousiastic, rude, initiating, independent, egocentric, soloist, assertive, competitive, courageous, reckless, offensive, undiplomatic, impulsive, aggressive, seperatist, strong-willed, quarrelsome, adventurous, pioneer, forceful, passionate, direct, honest, ...

Now combine .. :)

Interesting the thought of Neptune representing "The Real". Perhaps in the sence that nothing really exists, the material world is just a construct in our Mind and thus Neptune, traditionally representing The Imagination, could also be said to represent The Real, because nothing is "real", beyond being the image in the Mind?

Anyway, have you applied your theories to the lines? Line 16.1 would seem very Neptune/Mars to me. The Neptunian aloneness and the Martian boastfulness. For line 16.2 do you continue to play around with Mars/Neptune, or do you consider 16.2 as part of the nuclear trigram mountain and see what that does?

Hesitation brings remorse.

Yes, that was Plato's view basically. Only the Ideas or Forms are real and everything else is merely shadow on the walls of the cave.
But of course Neptune also covers illusion, so we can in practice not always identify it with the 'real'. :)

I was thinking about using the nuclear hexagram to distinguish between the hexagrams that are made of the same trigrams, such as hex 24 and hex 16.
Perhaps this works better than formulas that try to capture the difference between the bottom and top trigram (inner-outer, bottom evolves into top, bottom expresses through top, etcetera). Such formules seem too limiting. Although I think that replacing the planet on top by its natural house works quite well, usually. Hex 24 then becomes 'Mars in the 12th house' and hex 16 becomes 'Neptune in the 1st house'.

As to the lines, I have a speculative theory that links them to pairs of opposing signs. Line 1 <=> Aries and Libra, line 2 <=> Taurus and Scorpio, and so on, counter clockwise.
(perhaps it is possible to be more specific, for example: choose one of the first six signs if the place of the line is 'right' (yang for line 1,3 and 5; yin for the other lines) and the other sign if the line is 'wrong' ?).

For 16.1 the sign would be Aries or Libra. So 16.1 becomes 'Neptune in house 1 [this is hex 16] in Aries or Libra'.
16.2 becomes 'Neptune in house 1 in Taurus or Scorpio'.

However, this is speculative, needs more testing ... :)

I would like to continue these discussions on the I Ching and astrology. Perhaps we should start a thread devoted just to that.

Meanwhile, continuing thoughts on Hex 16...
I am impressed by the all inclusiveness of the hexagram. In 15 we had the awareness of each person being independant, separate, yet equal. I think of little round steel balls that are separate, yet all identical. Now in 16 there is the awareness that all these individual people, or individual moments, or individual wave lengths can be seen as connected. The Gestalt, perhaps, that we were talking about in other threads.
16.1 seems to speak of the individual sencing the connection to something greater.
16.2 is the connection, the awareness of the connection, and yet also the awareness that everything changes and this moment, this pattern, this line up of energies will also change.
16.3 the anxious moment when the old pattern no longer is insync with NOW and the new pattern is not yet perceived. I think in terms of music this might be the pause between the notes. Like a group singing together and point where one must be silent, counting the beats internally and then at just the right moment, with no cue from the outside, join in.

16 seems expansive by contrast to 15. One of the aspects of Yi lore that I've refused to deal with so far is the whole issue of trigrams as determing the meaning of the hex or the individual lines. One part of me feels that idea was added at a later date, but sometimes the meaning of a hexagram seems to derive a serious amount of its meaning from the trigrams comprising it. 16, for instance. Thunder over earth - didn't the Chinese believe that thunder rose out of the earth (and I've heard, but I'd like this confirmed or debunked, that lightning actually travels from the earth to the sky)? If so, it's an expansive energy in 16.

So anyway, the point I'm making in a roundabout kinda way is that I see 16 as expansive more than all-inclusive. I think that's why it says: "Advantage establishing lords" - to ground and earth the expansive energy. Of course it also counsels riding the energy when it says "moving army" - but that's its beauty - it balances riding the expansive energy of the time with establishing firm centers of organization and groundedness.

If you look at hex 16 as Neptune and Mars, or Neptune in house 1 - Neptune is by its nature not very well suited to act 'martial'.
It could represent somebody in an oceanic state of consciousness, one with all & everything (or submerged in a herd, or just used to anonimity in the background) who is now asked to emerge from the whole as an individual and assert a 'self'.

It looks like he or she is trying to find a balance between Mars and Neptune in the first 3 lines.
In line 1 there is too much Mars, too much 'self'. It is as if a limited self says 'I am Neptune', 'I am the Ocean'. Like a would be guru. :)
In line 3 there is not enough Mars and we see (learned?) helplessness, a game that Neptunians sometimes like to play.
Line 2 finds the balance, the middle way.

The next lines - again seeking a balance, but on a higher level?
But we are still with line 3, so ... wait.

Perhaps it was risky to invite me to post my astrological stuff, Rosada, because I'm now getting 'in the mood' and I'm tempted to flood the thread with it.
Hmm, this is also 16? Stuff that is usually kept in the background and now ...? And too much enthousiasm?
Anyway, I will try to find that damned balance!

Oh yes, another thread? That has been tried a few times but not much came of it. Not sure. Maybe when we come to line 4? :)

dobro - I like expansive. I get a visual of the outdoor hospital scene in Gone With The Wind where first we have a close up of Scarlet with the one soldier and then the camera angle widens and we see the miles of wounded. With 15 - 16 we go from being the solitary man to connecting with all sentient beings from here to eternity including Gods and ancestors...

Martin, if you feel to continue posting your astrological correlations here it's fine with me. I saw a cartoon in the Dec. 4 New Yorker page 92. Seemed to connect with the music, boasting and military theme of 16.1 as well as Neptune/alcohol and Mars/bands...
The drum major is sitting alone at the bar and telling the bartender, "The others will be along in a moment."

... well, maybe you had to have seen it.

On line 3, I think of it as dependant enthusiasm, and saying something like “If only….” In this case waiting for something or someone to inspire you accomplishes nothing.
