I note that 22.3 Wilhelm version has never actually been posted on this thread:

22.3
Nine in the third place mean:
Graceful and moist.
Constant perseverance brings good fortune.
This represents a very charming life situation. One is under the spell of grace and the mellow mood induced by wine. This grace can adorn, but it can also swamp us. Hence the warning not to sink into convivial indulence but to remain constant in perseverance. Good fortune depends on this.
-Wilhelm.

Notes to myself before moving any further into 23...

The progression of the hexagrams fascinates me. I know there are those who champion the idea that any hexagram can relate to any other with as much validity as we see in the order the ancients chose. Yet I think traveling the path in the order they gave is appropriate for the beginner, not because we are too naive to be trusted with following random choices, but because the order of the hexagrams in the traditional sequence recommended does make for an easy darn good, smooth and enjoyable flow. Why not enjoy it?

Anyway, 21 is Biting Through, resolving any apparent obstacles to communcation. With all known problems resolved we then flow with 22. We enjoy a brief respite of bliss before the lessons start up again.

22.GRACE aka. GOD DON'T LIKE UGLY

THE JUDGEMENT

GRACE has success.
( All things being equal, the pretty one wins.)

In small matters it is favorable to undertake something.
(Do only what you can complete in one setting)

THE IMAGE
Fire at the foot of the mountain:
The image of grace.
(Even when speeding, a car's headlight's only illuminate only the next 200 feet or so:
The image of faith.)

1. He lends grace to his toes, leaves the carriage and walks.
(Get out of the fast lane, live at the pace that gives you the most authentic experience.)

2. Lends grace to the beard on his chin.
(You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?)

3. Graceful and moist.
Constant perseverance brings good fortune.
(Master 22.2. Bring your promises up to date and experience your reward: If even for only one brief shinning moment you're walk and talk are in snyc so you're happy and you know it, well then, God bless you!)
Constant perseverance brings good fortune.
(Be vigilent, and may your happiest moment last forever!)

22.4
Grace or simplicity?
(Live visualizing a better tomorrow, or simply live in the Now, today?)
A white horse comes as if on wings.
(Salvation comes)
He is not a robber,
(You are only asked to donate that which you feel to give)
he will woo at the right time.
(Enlightenment will come when you can handle it.)

22.5
Grace in the hills and gardens.
(You see the beauty in all places, all people and all things.)
The roll of silk is meager and small.
(So you know you're gifts are nothing unigue.)
Humiliation, but in the end good fortune.
(So you know it's inevitable you will feel lacking.
But this doesn't phase you and inevitably your positive attitude manefests in your being accepted, fitting in.)

22.6
Simple grace. No blame.
(Be yourself. Don't assume to be anything more than yourself and you wont get into trouble.)

Ultimately, inevitably, things will change, we will Split Apart from this perfect moment of alignment of intention and manefestation. But until then, undertake something, intend something and enjoy the success.

STRONGLY disagree. For learning the structues and their creation forms etc, the natural sequence of hexagrams is the binary sequence and is far far superior in understanding the structures of the I Ching and their relationships derived from self-referencing. The traditional sequence is one of MANY derived from the hexagrams created in the natural self-referencing method and then 'reordered' to bring out some specialist perspective.

The pairs, quartets, octets etc all formed from the natural recursion of IC give far superior insights into what the IC universals covers than does the traditional sequence.
The issues are in the almost religious focus on the 'imperial' edition where the focus has its roots in simple ignorance of what is being delt with - self-referencing - where someone put down a particular perspective, a PART, that has been then taken as if the WHOLE (this is call metonymy and ties in with metaphor and issues of symmetric etc)

Binary sequence from 000000 to 111111 using traditional numbers and showing their octets:

02,23 08,20 16,35 45,12 (earth octet)
15,53 39,53 62,56 31,33 (mountain octet)
07,04 29,59 40,64 47,06 (water octet)
46,18 48,57 32,50 28,44 (wind octet)
24,27 03,42 51,21 17,25 (thunder octet)
36,22 63,37 55,30 49,13 (fire octet)
19,41 60,61 54,38 58,10 (lake octet)
11,26 05,09 34,14 43,01 (heaven octet)

Due to the self-referencing the pairs are naturally formed, as are quartets and octets. Futhermore, again due to the self-referencing, the methods in interpreting the whole sequence (opposites, complements etc) are also applicable for all octets... and with all of that also comes XOR etc etc.

This is far easier to learn than the dynamics of the traditional sequence in that THAT sequence is limited due to its specialisation. The problem is the promotion of the traditional IC as if 'THE' IC when it isnt... but try and explain that to rigid traditionalists!

Never snow again

There should be a law forbidding falling snow anywhere but in the mountains... :D

I vote against, never snow in Holland again, never a white blanket anymore, I would really miss it.

It also has to snow here, in the woods opposite our house. Great big conifers looking exactly like Christmas card pictures - beautiful.

I think of the evolution from 22 to 23 as a matter of over-22-ing things. You need to create an image of the essence - so you can get a clear idea of its identity yourself, and so other people can relate. At 23 it turns out that the image has outlived its authenticity, and it would be futile to put more energy into maintaining it. (Now it's become just a façade.)

'Devoted to making the appearance beautiful, and hence success is exhausted - and so Stripping Away follows.'

Well said, Hilary.
Chris disagrees with my take on the order of the hexagrams, Frank r wont go along with the NoSnow edict, yes the moment of alignment has passed...

Yes it occurs to me we trap ourselves often quite unintentionally in the persona/image we build with others, till it can get to the point where you can find you think even your friends don't really know you cos the image you made isn't even you at all. Then its inevitably 23 time, how can anyone relate when they can't even see you.

Like the flower analogy though it also reminds me strongly of 15.

Chris disagrees with my take on the order of the hexagrams, ...

That is a general statement, I was being particular, in that I take issue with your focus on the traditional ordering being useful for training in understanding the IC.

The traditional material is foundational in that that is how the IC has been passed down over the eons but that is an example of metonymy - the part that is the traditional sequence is interpreted as if 'the whole IC', as if 'all there is'. This is false.

the part-as-whole perspective seeds the 'fundamentalist' perspectives we find with traditionalists (and as such can bring out the religious associations where there is a fight to the death to maintain some 'purity' of form - even though the form is undifferentiated in the first place! - as bit like trying to keep a child as a child, not allowing it to grow up and so show its fullest potentials/capabilities.)

From the position of understanding the development of the IC, the 'how is it possible' perspective, you will NOT get that from following traditional perspectives - they offer a PART of the whole only and then try to insist that that part is the whole and THAT perspective is rubbish.

We then have to investigate the need for perpetuating such rubbish - is it ignorance or rejection of change that can affect one's identity or is it a threat to business - e.g. all of the current 'gurus' would need to update and in so doing reveal how much they have ignored of the whole of the IC for the sake of their exploitations of 'mystic' approaches that generate income. IOW their guru status in fact shows them to be no more than dilettantes. -- IOW the traditional material has been take 'as is' and exploited as such. In that exploitation there is no attempt to identify 'the reason why', all is accepted 'as is' since that is easy to do and easy to sell... the trust and gullability of humans is well known to be a source of income ;-)

We need to move on Rosada, we need to 'grow up' and take on responsibility for our actions and that includes use of the IC to 'solve problems'. By doing so, by covering the FULL SPECTRUM that is the IC so the gurus can gain some credability for the IC rather than seek all for themselves (and in so doing discredit the IC).

it basically comes down to being a professional - one needs to know the Science of one's Art as one does the Art of one's Science. Full specturm understanding allows for that, I can toss coins and explain what is going on or ask questions and do the same. BUT in so doing one also has to 'update' belief systems.

There are a LOT of so-called gurus (such as Anthony etc) setting up IC 'schools' that are, from a full spectrum perspective, rip offs - the soul focus is to sell fiction laced with fact to make a living and in so doing 'limit' the IC from growing.

Hadn't thought of that, but it makes clear sense.

(Thanks for sharing your snow covered trees :). Maybe a picture is forthcoming?)

Thanks. Yes, I took it the day before I posted it. Looking out the window, the sun came through the heavy rain clouds in such a way that I knew there must be a rainbow outside. It could be seen from one side to the other, and it appeared to land at the foot of the mountain. I zoomed in to catch it.
